A Harley Quinn scene from The Suicide Squad has been unintentionally recreated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Ever since Margot Robbie first appeared as the psychiatrist turned psychotic Joker accomplice/lover in 2016’s Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn has become a go-to Halloween/cosplay costume. Following the solo film, Birds of Prey (2020), Robbie reprised her now-iconic role this year in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

In The Suicide Squad, Harley and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), are joined by Bloodsport (Idris Elba) Peacemaker (John Cena), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), and Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian). This new version of Task Force X is dispatched on a suicide mission to Corto Maltese to destroy Project Starfish. Partway through the film, a captive Harley is taken to the palace of Silvio Luna (Juan Diego Botto), Corto Maltese’s new dictator, who is revealed to be infatuated with Harley. Before murdering him due to more than a few red flags, Harley has a tranquil experience in the palace, including a Snow-White-esque encounter with a flock of parakeets.

Gunn recently took to Twitter to admire the similarities between outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Vogelpark Marlow bird park and Harley Quinn’s stay at Luna’s palace. The director jokingly implies Merkel was attempting to cosplay. Check it out below:

Similar to the humor on display above, Gunn’s take on DC characters in The Suicide Squad is faithful to the spirit of John Ostrander’s comic. Regarding Harley, Gunn has said it was a privilege to write for Robbie’s character. Not only does he continue character development but his movie pays homage to her television and comic book roots, stretching back to Harleen Quinzel's debut in the Batman: The Animated Series.

Harley’s look in The Suicide Squid is reminiscent of outfits she would wear in the Arkham video games and the animated series. Including Harley's “flower power” sequence and what can only be referred to as “Harley Vision,” The Suicide Squad is arguably Harley's most faithful live-action depiction and Robbie is more comfortable in the role than ever. There are a handful of moments where she dominates the screen. For example, even a dialogue-less scene involving parakeets makes government heads want to take a crack at being Harley Quinn. As evidenced by Gunn’s post, it’s not as easy as Robbie makes it look. That being said, there’s sure to be more of the character in the DC Extended Universe’s future.
