Even though there are still two months to go until Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are starting to piece together a marketing campaign for their other 2016 release: Suicide Squad, which comes out this August. The film, directed by David Ayer (Fury), focuses on a ragtag group of antiheroes and villains assigned to Task Force X, a special team put together by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to go somewhere very bad that will most likely get them killed.
The studio recently released a new trailer for the film, which illustrated why some moviegoers are anticipating Suicide Squad a little more than Dawn of Justice. Viewers are warming up to the worst heroes ever, and fortunately for them, they'll be able to bring some of the colorful characters home with them. Ayer is starting to promote the tie-in merchandise for his film, beginning with an action figure of the lovely Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie).
Ayer took to his Twitter account to share an image of the figure, which conveys Robbie's likeness very accurately. Everything from the costume design to the tattoos replicates what will be seen in the film, making this a must have item for any collector:

It's become apparent that Harley is going to be one of the stars of the film. Since her debut in 1992, the character has become one of the most popular (and marketable) in the DC mythos. Suicide Squad marks the first time Harley has appeared in live-action form, and it appears Ayer has done her justice. Audiences have responded very well to what's been shown of Robbie's performance so far, as the actress seems to have nailed all the vital traits that's made Quinn a standout for years. Chances are Suicide Squad won't be the only time moviegoers see her on the big screen, especially with a solo Batman movie being planned.
Attentive fans may notice that there are other figures above Harley's head in the photo - one wearing shoes and another with a bare foot. There are no real clues as to who they might be, but it looks like an (unintended) tease of what's to come as more Suicide Squad items are released. With Harley being revealed this early in the game, fans will no doubt be wanting a Joker figure to accompany her, so they can display the twisted romantic couple together. But the Clown Prince of Crime is only one of the characters who will be in high demand as hype for the movie heats up.
Harley being front and center in regards to the Suicide Squad products is a smart movie. Hasbro received a lot of flack for the infamous #WheresRey fiasco, and Black Widow got shortchanged in Avengers: Age of Ultron merchandise. If Quinn received similar treatment, it would have caused another unneeded controversy that reflected poorly on the manufacturers. Hopefully, the companies have learned from the prior incidents and will make a concentrated effort to ensure all characters are well-represented in lucrative merchandise from the start. As the studios promote diversity through the actual films, it's nice to see their partners get on board with that initiative.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25, 2016, which is followed by Suicide Squad on August 5, 2016; Wonder Woman on June 23, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 23, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and then Green Lantern Corps. on June 19, 2020.
