Warner Bros' Suicide Squad wound up being one of the more divisive summer blockbusters of 2016, hit by many negative reviews from critics and audience reactions that ran the gamut from enthusiastic to appalled. Whereas there's been a debate about whether or not 2016's other DC Extended Universe installment, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, can be consider a true commercial success (due to its high costs), Squad largely met its expectations and is regarded as a financial success.
Now, we know just how successful it was. Suicide Squad has ended its domestic theatrical run, and now has a final box office tally.
As reported by Box Office, Suicide Squad concluded its official run in U.S. theaters with a final take of $325.10 million. That makes it the 8th highest (domestic) grossing feature of the year. Notably, it grossed only $5 million less than the more expensive and heavily-hyped Batman V Superman - with which it shared continuity and a cameo from Ben Affleck's Batman, as well as Ezra Miller's Flash.

Based on the popular recurring DC Comics series, Suicide Squad was centered on a covert government program to furlough incarcerated supervillains to undertake extralegal paramilitary operations. Though an ensemble feature, the film's storyline and marketing ultimately focused primarily on Will Smith as the high-tech assassin Deadshot and Margot Robbie as the ex-lover of The Joker, Harley Quinn. Viola Davis, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne also appeared in the film.
The film had been much hyped throughout 2015 and 2016, but many fans were left nervous at its prospects when early word was released of major reshoots happening during production and rumors that the film had begun without a completed script. The film ultimately debuted to poor reviews and further gossip of a troubled production, but can now be said to not have suffered too profoundly with audiences as a result - though many fans have expressed distaste for Leto as a reimagined Joker and a continuation of the grim tone that drew similar controversy for Dawn of Justice.
The future of the franchise, however, is not yet known. A direct sequel to the film has not been announced, and there has been little if any word of the various characters appearing in any of the upcoming DCEU features to follow - though there is a Harley Quinn and Birds of Prey film in the works. Additionally, several cast members are said to have been signed to extended contracts similar to the arrangements made for various Marvel actors. Margot Robbie and Will Smith both have pre-existing production deals at Warner Bros.
