Warning: contains spoilers for Suicide Squad #8!

By definition, members of the Suicide Squad are expected to "heroically" die if that's what it takes to achieve their missions, but it's still shocking when members like Deadshot bite the dust and remain dead. While it’s been over a year since Floyd Lawton died with no hint of a return, it appears Amanda Waller has finally found a way to ensure that not even death gets convicts out her Suicide Squad.

In Suicide Squad #8 by Robbie Thompson, Eduardo Pansica, and Dexter Soy, Waller’s Suicide Squad brawls in hell to steal a piece of the barrier protecting the Rock of Eternity. Meanwhile, Peacemaker and his team attempt to enlist Swamp Thing on Waller’s behalf, only for Peacemaker’s bomb to be removed by Swamp Thing, granting him his freedom. As the bloody battle in Hell reaches its end, Major Force appears and captures the souls of the different Squad members who have died for Waller. Back on Earth, Rick Flag continues to build his own Suicide Squad to combat Waller, believing his mentor has gone too far.

When Culebra dies in Hell and her soul immediately reappears right there, at first it seems like this is the end for her time in the Squad. To her surprise, however, she then wakes up in the Suicide Squad’s morgue, with Waller explaining that the Department of Defense confiscated a large shipment of Lazarus Resin, which she has taken control of. Waller explains to Culebra that the Resin can bring people back to life, but they’ll constantly need doses of the substance to stop them from dying again. Waller also mentions that now, people who have been brought back to serve the Squad with the resin will no longer need to have bombs surgically implanted, since all she has to do is withhold the resin, and that’ll be enough incentive. She fittingly summarizes Culebra (and her future teammates’) plight with the ominous: “Even death can’t get you out of the Suicide Squad now.”

While Waller and her staff are still clearly testing the resin and determining its viability, the initial results seem promising. Given that readers can also view the resin at work over in Task Force Z with villains who have been dead even longer, it seems like only a matter of time until Waller uses it to revive the late greats from the Squad, such as Deadshot. Deadshot proved himself to be a great asset to Task Force X on countless occasions, and while he has been replaced by the likes of Bloodsport and Peacemaker more recently, few can match his charisma, efficacy, and aim. Waller may not be attached to the members of the Squad in the same way fans of the series are, but she values her goals above all else, and she'll doubtless want the best team possible to achieve them.

The Suicide Squad is by design a deadly proposition for the convicts enlisted by Amanda Waller. While some fan favorites have survived long tenures in the squad, many ultimately perish, and do so for good. While this appeared to be the case with Deadshot, the introduction of Lazarus Resin means that Floyd Lawton may have to return to the Suicide Squad, and under a whole new type of coercion from Waller.
