Despite a decidedly rough critical reception, Suicide Squad had solid legs in the box office and closed out its domestic run with a healthy $325 million ($745 million worldwide). Part of this popularity was due to its novel premise, star power in the form of its leads, Margot Robbie and Will Smith, and a raggedy, neon-infused style to set it apart from its own crowded genre.

Every comic adaptation has its detractors, a common criticism often being that it wasn't enough like the source material, and Suicide Squad certainly doesn't play it safe in this regard. Director David Ayer (Fury) uses a whole different palette from the ones that fans were used to, for better or for worse. But entirely reinventing the iconic looks of a character like The Joker doesn't come easy. A lot of planning, designing, and redesigning comes into play before the cameras ever start rolling. That's where concept art comes into play.

Some new art recently popped up on Imgur showing off early Suicide Squad concept work for the likes of Harley Quinn, Slipknot, Katana, Boomerang, El Diablo, Killer Croc, Deadshot, The Joker, and Enchantress. There's also a different take on Harley's cell, illustrating that it wasn't always as spacious in concept as it ended up being in the final picture. (Lucky Harley!)

Some of these alternate costumes are quite similar to what we ended up with. The first image of Harley, for instance, looks like a slightly more aggressive version of her ultimate live action look. Slipknot, has some minor differences, like a new helmet. Katana's more appropriately dressed for a military incursion, ditching the short tube top of the film. Boomerang's look is more or less identical. (It's clear he doesn't change his clothes often.) Diablo has an all new classy casual look. Croc loses the jacket but keeps the hoodie. Deadshot's got a whole new, simpler body armor, with an adjusted color scheme. Enchantress' new looks are as varied as the ones she sports in the film, and come in all the colors of the rainbow.
