With the recent release of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, some DC fans might be wondering what their beloved supervillains will look like in the upcoming game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Little information has been given about the 4-player co-op experience, save for an action-packed cinematic trailer that revealed the premise of the game's story. The game will see the return of several notable characters, including Deadshot, Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang.

[Warning: Spoilers for James Gunn's Suicide Squad movie are below.]

Captain Boomerang has been a prominent member of the Suicide Squad since its second iteration, alongside Deadshot and Harley Quinn. That pattern with be continuing, as each is one of the primary four characters in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. However, fans of Captain Boomerang may notice some stark differences between the one in the Suicide Squad movies and comics, and the character shown in Kill the Justice League's trailer.

The original Captain Boomerang was a man named George "Digger" Harkness, who was one of Flash's many nemeses. In the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League trailer, Captain Boomerang is shown to be using super speed alongside his arsenal of boomerangs. This superpower is absent from many iterations of the character and has left some fans wondering how he obtained his abilities. While Harkness has lacked superspeed in previous versions, this power is extremely prevalent in his son, Owen Mercer. Like many comic characters, Captain Boomerang perishes (several times) and the villainous mantle is taken over by Owen. Due to Owen's parentage by Captain Boomerang and Meloni Thawne, he inherited superspeed and paired his powers with boomerangs to carry on his father's legacy. It's possible both Captain Boomerangs have been combined to make a more 'super' villain in Kill the Justice League.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's Captain Boomerang Will Survive Longer

The Suicide Squad in Kill the Justice League

As the Suicide Squad's name suggests, many members of the team have perished over the years in brutal ways. Captain Boomerang's unfortunate demise in James Gunn's Suicide Squad movie was a tragic end to the character, but his fate will likely be different in Kill the Justice League. Captain Boomerang is confirmed to be one of the main, playable characters, and has little (if any) danger of being permanently killed in-game. This would eliminate the risk of death associated with the Suicide Squad concept, but ensure the longevity of the game.

Another significant difference between Captain Boomerang's comic and film versions, and Kill the Justice League's version, is his weapons. Captain Boomerang has strayed from his boomerang-centric roots in favor of more powerful weapons before, but it appears Kill the Justice League will be making this a permanent change. Several times in the game's trailer, Digger utilizes an explosive pistol alongside his boomerangs in combat. These weapons, paired with his superspeed, have veered from the traditional Captain Boomerang fighting style and revamped his character for combat, similar to how King Shark is different in Kill the Justice League.

Captain Boomerang will see some major changes in Kill the Justice League, but fans can still count on his brash, sarcastic banter. His dynamic with fellow characters Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and King Shark are sure to craft a pleasurable experience for fans of the Suicide Squad franchise. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League does not have a set release date yet but is expected in 2022.
