Harley Quinn actor Margot Robbie confirms she's never seen David Ayer's cut of the 2016 Suicide Squad but is "very curious" to see his original vision for the movie. Robbie was part of an all-star ensemble for the film, including Will Smith as Deadshot, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Jared Leto as The Joker. Despite a sizzle reel/first trailer, which blew the roof off of comic-con in 2015, the final product was a chaotic, confusing mess that shifted in tone from scene to scene.

As a result, it was mauled by critics and, despite making decent money at the box office, is considered one of DC's most disappointing efforts. Fans have long called for Ayer's version of the movie to see the light of day, with the director himself teasing that his original version exists and is far better than the Suicide Squad, which was released in cinemas. Some fans have even suggested the movie could be released on HBO Max, similar to the deal negotiated with Zack Snyder for his version of Justice League. However, the campaign has so far failed to gain the kind of traction needed to make it a reality.

Now, Robbie, who first played Harley Quinn for Ayer in Suicide Squad, has confirmed she hasn't seen Ayer's cut of the movie either. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Comicbook.com), Robbie also confirms there was a lot of extra footage shot for the film, which didn't end up in the theatrical cut. She ends by saying she'd be "very curious" to see the so-called Ayer Cut and compare it to the original. You can see her full comments below:

I never saw the Ayer Cut. I mean, I know we shot a lot of stuff that didn't make it into the movie. I would be very curious myself.

Deadshot and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad

Robbie's comments reinforce that Ayer was unable to edit the film to his vision from the beginning. The director has said he's privately edited his cut of the film, and the fact one of his main stars hasn't ever seen it confirms it's very much his private thing. While Robbie may one day be sent Ayer's cut of the movie, fans are likely never to see it, sadly. Ayer recently said rumors of his cut of Suicide Squad getting an HBO Max release were "not true," and there has been zero word from the studio on the possibility of it ever being greenlit.

Still, fans at least have the chance to look forward to a potentially better version of the comic book supervillain team, with James Gunn's sequel/reboot The Suicide Squad set to hit theaters in 2021. Robbie is returning as Harley Quinn for that movie, after reprising the role in this year's Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). By all reports, Gunn crafted his own vision for the movie, with studio heads having learned from their experience on Suicide Squad to leave a filmmaker to their own devices. So, despite there being little chance of seeing the Ayer Cut, fans of the characters will at least be able to see them in action again next year.
