The Ayer cut of 2016's Suicide Squad has just received an optimistic updated from the director of the DC movie, David Ayer. The Suicide Squad movie went through a pretty unconventional process, as the old DC management chose to edit the film around the way trailers presented the story, effectively doing away with Ayer's vision for the movie. Multiple scenes got cut, and the movie was poorly received, which led to James Gunn's more vibrant sequel/ reboot The Suicide Squad in 2021.David Ayer shared on Twitter an optimistic update on the status of his Suicide Squad cut.

The director told a fan that he recently spoke to Gunn, asking that the audience be patient as Gunn sets up his new DC universe, because "good things are coming" — hinting that it is not too late for Ayer's cut of Suicide Squad. Following the seven years since Ayer's movie was released in theaters, DC has changed a lot, with The Suicide Squad director Gunn now being the studio's creative lead, which could help — or not — the project. Check out Ayer's full quote translated below:

I spoke to him a while ago. All with patience. He has the right to put together his new universe before visiting the past. Cheer up. Good things are coming ;)

Would Releasing The Suicide Squad’s Ayer Cut Make Sense For DC?

DC is currently undergoing the beginning of a major creative overhaul, with new DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran ditching the old DCEU — which has home to Ayer's Suicide Squad — in favor of their new plans for the DC Universe. Ayer understands that process is the creatives' main focus at the moment, but he did seem hopeful about a visit to the past, and Warner Bros. learned from the Snyder Cut how to conduct similar events of fan demand.

While Zack Snyder's Justice League — which had new footage shot — eventually reached audiences through an HBO Max release in 2021, there was significantly more chatter surrounding that version of Justice League than there is about seeing the original take on Suicide Squad, especially since the Ayer Cut is said to include a lot more of Jared Leto's version of the Joker, which is far from being popular with the general audience. As DC starts to look forward with Gunn and Safran's DC Universe Chapter One, releasing a movie that is tied to DC's controversial past, with Leto's Joker prominent in Suicide Squad's Ayer Cut, seems like the wrong play.

Gunn has already shown that the new DC Universe will likely have few ties to the past, by announcing late last year that Henry Cavill would be leaving the role of Superman behind. The measure happened because DC is moving forward with Superman: Legacy, a reboot movie focusing on a younger Clark Kent, with Gunn currently writing the script. Cavill had a way bigger following than those interested in seeing the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, so if the new DC management is willing to let the actor go, it appears that a reveal of the differences and new scenes in Suicide Squad's Ayer Cut makes little sense for DC.
