Some fans might've thought they found a new Polka-Dot Man Easter egg in The Suicide Squad, but director James Gunn has rejected the idea. Even now, almost two months after The Suicide Squad arrived in theaters and on HBO Max, fans are still finding new things to discuss about the movie. Acting as something of a cross between a reboot and a direct sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad helmed by David Ayer, Gunn's movie offers a brash and violent reinvention of the DC anti-hero team.

Much of The Suicide Squad's cast is comprised of new characters, many of whom have already become favorites in the eyes of fans. For example, John Cena's Peacemaker is already set to lead his own spin-off series for HBO Max, while King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) has become the subject of numerous online memes and fan creations. Another Suicide Squad standout is Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), a rather sad character on the surface who soon becomes one of the movie's best heroes. Interestingly, The Suicide Squad isn't Dastmalchian's only DC movie this year, as he also voiced Calendar Man for Batman: The Long Halloween.

It's that detail that led fans to believe Gunn snuck in a clever Easter egg in The Suicide Squad. Some might recall how, early on in the movie, the DCEU's iteration of Calendar Man (played by Sean Gunn in a cameo) goads Polka-Dot Man while at Belle Reve. A fan took to social media to ask both Dastmalchian and Gunn if this was done on purpose as a reference to the former's voice role in The Long Halloween. "I believe it was a coincidence!" Dastmalchian replied. Gunn said the same, writing, "I didn’t even know David played this character. It has more to do with me thinking @seangunn looks like Calendar Man in the Long Halloween comics."

With movies like The Suicide Squad, which are often packed with Easter eggs, it can be easy to see virtually everything as potential reference. Indeed, Gunn has even confirmed a few that actually are in The Suicide Squad, such as a Toxic Avenger reference and a shoutout to his late dog. It's just that when it comes to Polka-Dot Man and Dastmalchian's connection to Calendar Man, it was a happy coincidence on Gunn's part.

The Suicide Squad has already been released on PVOD and will arrive on Blu-ray later this month. With more and more people able to watch the movie at their leisure, Gunn should probably expect more fans to turn to him with questions about it. He'll remain in the Suicide Squad world for a bit longer thanks to Peacemaker and another mystery project he has in the works, so fans flocking to Gunn's social media page won't have to tone down on the DC topics just yet. They can ask about all the theories they have... so long as they don't mind being told they're wrong.
