The official synopsis for The Suicide Squad confirms the movie's main team and their dangerous mission. The follow-up to David Ayer's 2016 film Suicide Squad is part sequel, part reboot, featuring the return of characters like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, and Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang. Joining the returning cast in The Suicide Squad are John Cena, Idris Elba, Pete Davidson, and Peter Capaldi, along with several others.

Plot details have been kept under wraps until now, but early looks at the film teased a new location on some sort of tropical island instead of the ruined cityscape Task Force X traversed in the original film. James Gunn is directing The Suicide Squad, and promotion for the movie has made it clear he'll put his own spin on the well-known team from the comics. It sounds like The Suicide Squad is shaping up to be even more off-the-wall than initially thought, though.

The film's official synopsis from Warner Bros. confirms the members of the new team, specifically naming Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and Harley Quinn. The synopsis also teases the deadliness of their new assignment and just where the gang will get dropped off. As previously revealed, Task Force X will be deployed to the island of Corto Maltese, a name instantly recognizable to fans of the comics. Check out the full synopsis for The Suicide Squad below:

Welcome to hell — a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and- destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave...and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

The movie has been teased as being in the vein of 1970s war films, and Corto Maltese seems key to this. In the comics, the island is off the coast of South America and frequently sees rebel uprisings. In one comic plot line, the U.S. and Soviet Union both get involved in the politics of Corto Maltese and, with the potential for two different Task Force X squads, members of the Suicide Squad could go head to head in the film.

The large roster of characters would certainly allow for this, and Gunn has said "no character was protected by DC," so it's likely everyone on the list in the synopsis will not make it out of the film alive. 2016's Suicide Squad tried to do this, killing off a few characters here and there, but Gunn seems insistent his film will be different. With the connection to the comics and the promises of a bloody, R-rated thrill ride, it sounds like Gunn is making good on his promise to revamp The Suicide Squad and bring something new and exciting to the table, which the DC Extended Universe desperately needs.
