The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn explains why Bloodsport’s costume was so complicated to design for the film’s crew. As the follow-up to David Ayer’s 2016 film, The Suicide Squad—which premiered in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6—introduces a slew of new characters to Task Force X and, in turn, the DC Extended Universe. This time around, Rick Flag and Harley Quinn are joined by Peacemaker, Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man, King Shark, and Idris Elba’s Robert DuBois Aka Bloodsport (not to be confused with Will Smith’s Deadshot).

In The Suicide Squad, Bloodsport is an assassin incarcerated in Belle Reeve for putting Superman in the ICU with a kryptonite bullet. Bloodsport is approached by Amanda Waller to lead her suicide squad in its mission to Corto Maltese. At first, Bloodsport refuses, which leads to Waller’s threatening of his daughter, Tyla DuBois. Ultimately, Bloodsport's involvement proves crucial to the development of the film’s central characters as he backs the decision to defend Corto Maltese from Starro the Conqueror and blackmail Waller. On top of his character arc, Bloodsport has become a fan favorite thanks to his suit, which is seemingly capable of conjuring any weapon.

James Gunn often shares behind-the-scenes content and Easter Eggs from his films on social media. One of his most recent Twitter posts explained how complicated Bloodsport’s costume was for The Suicide Squad’s crew, calling it the most complicated costume he’s had to work on by far. The concept art also reveals 14 hidden weapons, including a two-piece rifle. Check out Gunn's post and the concept art below:

In the comics, Bloodsport is able to battle Superman thanks in large part due to a device that allows him to teleport high-tech weapons to his person whenever he needs them. The Suicide Squad interpretation of Bloodsport, while portraying him as a non-powered character who wears a bulletproof skull helmet, his versatility is a result of a suit that holds an array of tools, including flamethrowers, grappling hooks, and more. He can quickly transform his gun into whatever he needs it to be by using the right attachments. Being able to essentially manufacture weapons on the spot takes the place of the teleportation device of his comic book counterpart.

The Suicide Squad’s Bloodsport certainly isn’t as villainous as he is on the page. All of the film’s “villains” are framed as misunderstood, even Peacemaker, who stars in HBO Max’s The Suicide Squad spinoff series, Peacemaker, which has been written and (mostly) directed by Gunn. Outside of his work on Marvel Studios' Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn has teased a handful of other DC projects that may be in the works. That being said, his first DC outing left the door open for Bloodsport to return, something Elba has expressed interest in. If and when we do see him again, what weapon he’ll be wielding is anyone’s guess.
