James Gunn comes to DC Films from Marvel Studios, so does that mean his film The Suicide Squad has a post-credits scene? Credits scenes have been part of Hollywood for decades, but it wasn't until Marvel started using them routinely to set up future Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that they became more commonplace in the industry. Nowadays, most blockbuster movies end with some form of end-credits scene, either resolving a storyline or laying the foundation for another one.

Even DC sometimes uses credits scenes. The studio included quite a few in the early years of the DC Extended Universe, when things were still burgeoning. For example, David Ayer's Suicide Squad included a mid-credits scene that set up 2017's Justice League. Amanda Waller and Bruce Wayne met in a restaurant and came to an agreement that satisfied both parties; Waller wanted Wayne to support her reputation, and Wayne needed information to find the metahumans to build his League. It only makes sense for the sequel to have its own credits scene as well.

The Suicide Squad does have one post-credits scene at the very end of the credits, but there's also a coda that comes immediately after the movie's title card before the credits start rolling. The first scene connects to the beginning of the film, while the post-credits scene is more about the franchise's future, though it may not be immediately obvious for casual moviegoers. Without any mid-credits scenes like there were for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, all in all, there's only one post-credits scene in The Suicide Squad.

Whereas the first Suicide Squad movie was focused on building out the DCEU, given that it was only the second film to release in the franchise following confirmation that Warner Bros was launching a full-fledged shared universe, The Suicide Squad's post-credits scene is squarely focused on Task Force X itself. It's not about teasing another DC movie or even the squad's next mission. It's a smart way to utilize the time and it actually does something that Marvel recently did with their own movies, showing how closely related the plans are for both universes.

At the moment, DC's plans for Suicide Squad include releasing James Gunn's Peacemaker spinoff, starring John Cena, in 2022. It's possible that series could continue with a second season, but it's unclear if there will be a Suicide Squad 3, particularly one with Gunn at the helm. The writer-director has previously spoken about potentially returning in the future, but for now, he'll be busy working on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which release in holiday 2022 and summer 2023, respectively.
