The new and highly anticipated trailer for The Suicide Squad has just been released as a YouTube ad, giving a solid glimpse of what's to come in director James Gunn’s take on the story. The upcoming movie has been described as a standalone sequel, or soft reboot, of 2016’s critically panned Suicide Squad, which was directed by David Ayer. It will see the return of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag.

A few months ago, the first official trailer for The Suicide Squad was released and introduced the new team, which consists of several fresh faces portraying the group of supervillains, including John Cena as Peacemaker, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, and King Shark voiced by Sylvester Stallone. The trailer also revealed parts of several key plot points that will be explored in the film with no shortage of action. Now, after Gunn recently teased fans about its impending release date, the final trailer for The Suicide Squad is here.

The new trailer for The Suicide Squad comes as a YouTube advertisement and opens with glimpses of Elba’s Bloodsport serving his prison sentence while refusing to join Waller’s Suicide Squad as she stands sneering behind him before responding, "we'll see." Bloodsport is then seen having a vague conversation with his daughter who tells him her court date is nearing and that according to Waller, he may be able to help her out. Bloodsport does not take this well, as shortly thereafter, he’s face-to-face with Waller threatening her with a pen to her neck. Waller then seems to finally convince Bloodsport to join after emphasizing how important the mission is and how much she needs the participation. The trailer then shifts into introducing the team on screen as they appear one by one.

Waller can then be heard explaining that each member has been selected for their unique abilities. While en route to their mission, a brief look at the squad’s humorous camaraderie is shown, with Blackguard being quickly convinced that The Weasel is instead a werewolf, nearly aborting the mission out of fear and also with Harley Quinn apologizing for arriving late due to having “to go number 2.” Things get more serious after this as Waller can be heard explaining that their mission is to “destroy every trace of something known only as Project Starfish,” presumably referring to the movie's villain, Starro. The Thinker also makes an appearance as he warns their mission is, well, suicide. The remaining footage mainly consists of quick and intense action shots that tease both a thrilling and emotional journey, including an excited Polka-Dot Man exclaiming, "I'm a superhero!"

In addition to the trailer playing before YouTube videos, Warner Bros. has released new images from the movie showing events from the footage:

Based on the gripping trailer, it’s further clear Gunn has truly breathed new life into Task Force X's story and has made it his own. With his previous revelation that almost all of the characters in the movie will die, it seems that The Suicide Squad will not only be bringing the expected action this summer, but possibly some tears as well. Bloodsport and Ratcatcher 2 have an exchange in the trailer where they both say they’ll get each other out alive, which could potentially be foreshadowing their fates. So far, the film looks like it will be met with great success at the box office, not only because of the scenes, cinematics, and humor shown in the footage, but also because of the star-studded cast who seem to be bringing a high level of devotion to their characters.
