Tommy Wiseau Adds Himself to James Gunn's Suicide Squad Cast List

Tommy Wiseau really wants a part in The Suicide Squad, so much so that he went ahead and added himself to the cast list. Wiseau is, of course, the infamous star of The Room. He also served, even more infamously, as the film's writer, producer, director, and principal financier - reportedly pouring millions of his own mysterious accrued wealth into the project. Described as a "Tennesee Williams-level drama" and potential Oscar contender, the film emerged as anything but, making barely a blip on the radar of Hollywood. Despite that, however, the film's popularity grew over time due to midnight screenings. Eventually revered as much as ridiculed for its quality (or lack thereof), The Room went on to become a cult phenomenon that has continued to sell out screenings around the world until to this day. In 2017, James Franco directed and starred in The Disaster Artist, an Oscar-recognized film that explored The Room's insane and often extremely troubled production.

The Suicide Squad, meanwhile, is set to be somewhat of a follow-up to David Ayer's 2016 original, Suicide Squad. After previously writing and directing two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, James Gunn was fired by Disney and Marvel Studios due to the resurfacing of some old, controversial tweets. He was subsequently hired to helm the new DC installment based on the popular superhero-turned-antihero team originally created by Robert Kanigher and later more widely popularized by John Ostrander. Gunn was later rehired by Marvel to round out his trilogy with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Regardless, the popular writer and director remained committed to completing The Suicide Squad first - recently unveiling the full cast list and with it confirmed that production will kick off in Atlanta later this month.

Posting on Twitter, Wiseau expressed his desire to be a part of the film's extensive roster. He did this by taking the image Gunn had used to make the announcement and editing it to include his own name. The rest of the list remains mostly intact, including returning stars Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Joel Kinnaman. Equally, Task Force X newcomers Peter Capaldi, Idris Elba, and frequent Gunn collaborator Nathan Fillion remain present and correct. Unfortunately for Jai Courtney, Wiseau opted to remove him and place his own name on the top row besides former WWE performer, John Cena. Wiseau's full post can be seen in the space below:

This wouldn't be the first time that Wiseau has campaigned to join a franchise. Not only has he vyed for a cameo within the WWE but he sought to play Shadow the Hedgehog in the upcoming video game adaptation, Sonic the Hedgehog. Earlier in the year, he even reached out across the comic book aisle, releasing a bizarre musical mash-up of The Room and Avengers: Endgame. Wiseau made no mention who which character he would like to play in The Suicide Squad. He did, however, previously express interest in playing The JokerIn that endeavor, he even filmed an audition tape with himself as the Clown Prince of Crime opposite his frequent co-star Greg Sestero as Batman.

That role was previously played by Jared Leto and will next be embodied by Joaquin Phoenix in the wholly standalone Joker movie. As such, there is always a chance that the character could be reinvented in potential future DCEU movies. As oddly interesting as that might be, it's unlikely that Wiseau would be entrusted with such an iconic role. In terms of other characters, though, Gunn certainly isn't above such left-field choices. Whether Wiseau is ultimately gifted a role in The Suicide Squad or even has his campaign acknowledged by Gunn at all, however, shall remain to be seen.
