The Suicide Squad will unite new and familiar characters to tackle a brand-new threat — and a variety of different sub-teams and line-ups have already been confirmed to emerge in the process. Created first by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru, the first version of Task Force X debuted in 1959. Though still led by Rick Flag Jr., they were largely a group of scientists and soldiers investigating anomalous events. They were later famously reenvisioned into a supervillain-turned-antihero team by John Ostrander in 1987's Legends #3.

The group was first brought to the screen by David Ayer in the form of 2016's Suicide Squad. Despite accumulating a healthy box office return and even an Academy Award, the film was widely panned by critics and moviegoers alike. Ayer has since spoken out regarding the immense guilt he felt over the movie. Ayer has also insisted that his original Suicide Squad vision was much better than the remixed version ultimately released by Warner Bros. In the wake of the successful Snyder Cut campaign for Justice League, Ayer's statements have resulted in several calls for the release of his version. Whether or not that is destined to come to fruition, it was announced that James Gunn would write and direct a loose follow-up.

Several cast members from the original signed on to return, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. It was also confirmed that Viola Davis would also reprise the role of Amanda Waller. They will be joined by a much-expanded roster featuring Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Steve Agee (and Sylvester Stallone) as King Shark, and several more besides. Together, they will be forced to undertake a dangerous mission involving a South American dictator (and, as revealed in the first and second official trailers, much, much worse). Along the way, the larger whole will often split off into smaller groups and separate quests. Here's a breakdown of every sub-team already confirmed.

Polka-Dot Man, Harley Quinn, and Bloodsport

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man and Idris Elba as Bloodsport The Suicide Squad

Though it's a glimpse from behind the scenes, it's clearly a shot that was being filmed and thus from the film itself. Within it, Polka-Dot Man, Harley Quinn, and Bloodsport can be seen running together through a drenched and damaged building. The scene is likely from a later stage in The Suicide Squad's runtime — since Harley is wearing a dress rather than the attire from the start of the mission. The moment can be seen in the footage released at the DC FanDome event, at the 0:09 mark.

Harley Quinn, Polka-Dot Man, Ratcatcher 2, and Bloodsport

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2 and Idris Elba as Bloodsport The Suicide Squad

At the 0:11 mark in the same footage, Harley, Polka-Dot Man, and Bloodsport can again be seen running. There are some markedly different elements, however, making it difficult to discern whether it's connected to the previous scene or entirely separate. Firstly, they are out on the street. Bloodsport is also no longer wearing his helmet, and the group now includes Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior). Finally, and most curiously of all, Harley can be seen carrying a javelin — the traditional weapon of the same-titled villain and new Task Force X member. With him nowhere to be seen, it begs multiple questions: Did he die? If so, did Harley merely pick up the item to push forward with or did she personally kill him?

Mongal and Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn Mayling Ng as Mongal The Suicide Squad

At the 0:17 mark, Harley and Mongal (Mayling Ng) can be seen storming a beach together. Harley's outfit now matches the one seen in the recently-released images — which showed one of the teams en-route to the mission via helicopter. As such, this is likely not long after the Alpha Team's arrival and their first attempt at a direct attack. To that end, Harley is armed with a rocket launcher, which she promptly fired. Mongal, meanwhile, has her twin arm-mounted blades. Later glimpses of the same location show Blackguard emerging from the sea on his own. Similarly, Captain Boomerang can be seen battling independently with his signature weaponry. All the while Savant watches on from a distance and with safe cover. Mongal and Harley, however, form a distinct partnership.

The Suicide Squad Group Shot

Lending credence to the idea that there will be (to begin with, at least) two separate Task Force X teams, several confirmed members can be seen together with notable absences. Those present are Weasel (Sean Gunn), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Mongal, Javelin (Flula Borg), Boomerang, TDK (Nathan Fillion), Savant (Michael Rooker), and Flag and they can be seen walking in front of a U.S flag. The shot can be seen at the 0:45 mark. A variation of this moment can also be seen at 1:45 (with Gunn in the motion capture suit rather than the CGI Weasel form). At 1:48, it's revealed that they are walking towards a helicopter.

The interior of said helicopter made an appearance in previously-released images and, more extensively, in the second official trailer for The Suicide Squad. From them, it's revealed that Harley Quinn was a part of this iteration of the titular team. She arrived later than the others due to the fact that, in her words, she "had to go number 2". As such, this is likely before the mission and an introductory moment. That would appear to be as much for some of the team as the movie's audience — with such as Blackguard unfamiliar with Weasel. He and the group debate the eerie creature's true nature. Some even panic that he might be a werewolf, before learning the (someehow even darker and more horrifying) truth.

Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, and Ratcatcher 2

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport The Suicide Squad

Harley can be seen back in the red dress and still armed with the javelin in another quick shot at 0:45 of the DC FanDome footage. In the aftermath of some seemingly-catastrophic event, she is joined by Bloodsport and Ratcatcher 2. While he is once again sans helmet, Ratcatcher has adopted a version of the character's comic book gas mask. With the gloves matching those seen worn by the character on the poster, there's no doubt that it's her. This particular moment preemptively revealed that Starro will be The Suicide Squad's main villain. Another angle of this scene, focusing on Bloodshot and Ratcatcher 2 standing back-to-back and surveilling the destruction, can be seen at the 1:27 mark.

Polka-Dot Man and King Shark

David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man and Steve Agee as King Shark The Suicide Squad

Another glimpse at 0:46 reveals Dastmalchian and Agee together as Polka-Dot Man and King Shark, respectively. With the motion-capture effects yet to be implemented, they can be seen on a beach. On the surface, it would appear that the actors are simply messing around behind-the-scenes. However, given the kind of humor that Gunn usually injects into his projects, this could also be the duo bonding in an unconventional fashion. Whatever the case, a scene is at least between takes or being set up. As such, with no other characters seen nearby, they are evidently paired off separately at some stage.

Peacemaker and Rick Flag

Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag John Cena as Peacemaker The Suicide Squad

In less of a partnership than an actual brawl, Peacemaker and Flag can be seen together at 0:57. The shot comes courtesy of a reflection in Peacemaker's helmet. A more direct glimpse of the fight can be seen at the 1:11 mark of the teaser footage. It could be that the pair are merely coming to blows for reasons common to members of The Suicide Squad. It would even be almost expected for the two to clash. After all, Flag is in charge of the squad and Peacemaker would see himself more as leadership material. However, there could be another reason entirely: that Flag has been brainwashed by Starro and turned into one of his drones. As such, the fight could be because of more than conflicting egos. Equally, similar to Hawkeye and Black Widow in The Avengers, it could be that Peacemaker snaps Flag out of it. Once that's occurred, they would be in a prime position to team up for whatever comes next.

Peacemaker and Bloodsport

Idris Elba as Bloodsport and John Cena as Peacemaker The Suicide Squad

At the 1:07 mark, Peacemaker and Bloodsport can be seen navigating a jungle environment together. Based on them being entirely in their full costume, this is presumably shortly after they have arrived on the mission. Signs of minor destruction can be seen behind them as they surveil the terrain and assess the potential threats lurking within. Peacemaker's ruthlessness is also shown to be on full display — with the character pointing his gun at a seemingly random and ordinary man. Then again, if Starro is indeed the main villain, such seemingly innocuous bystanders could be drones waiting to strike. As such, by this point, the potentially excessive caution could have been proven to be warranted.

Polka-Dot Man and Bloodsport

David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man Pete Davidson as Blackguard The Suicide Squad

At 1:34, Polka-Dot Man can be seen unleashing a wave of his signature gadgets while also seemingly taking cover. What exactly the devices are being used for (or against) is purposely kept hidden. However, another member of Task Force X can be prominently seen behind him. At first glance, it could easily be mistaken for Davidson's iteration of Blackguard. Based on the details of the costume, though, a more likely bet is that its Bloodsport. Based on the way his arm seems to be raised, Bloodsport has his own weapon leveled towards the same thing that the polka-dots are aimed at. Based on the rows of cubicles, they're in an office building.

Harley Quinn and Polka-Dot Man

David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn The Suicide Squad

Seemingly within another section of the aforementioned office building, Harley Quinn can be seen at 1:35 along with Polka-Dot Man. What they were doing is left unclear and very much up in the air. However, it's not long before an explosion tears through the surrounding area. Having seemingly noticed the source of the blast and thus seen the fire coming, Harley goes into the full hero mode she occasionally demonstrated in previous DCEU outings. Pushing Polka-Dot Man backward, she propels them both to (likely only momentary) safety.

Polka-Dot Man, Peacemaker, Bloodsport, and Ratcatcher 2

Images also hinted that Polka-Dot Man, Peacemaker, Bloodsport, and Ratcatcher 2 would be a separate team. To begin with, at least. Potentially serving as a back-up to those glimpsed on the helicopter, they appear to drop into the war-torn chaos later than the others. That element of The Suicide Squad was actually teased in the teaser footage. At the 1:36 mark, all four can be seen together, seemingly investigating their new environment (and hunting threats). In impressively synchronized unison, they burst into a tent. As Ratcatcher 2 holds back the opening, both Peacemaker and Bloodsport raise their weapons with deadly intent. Polka-Dot Man, meanwhile, looks just as ready to unleash elements of his unconventional arsenal.

Savant and Rick Flag

Rick Flag gets off of a truck

Rooker's version of Savant and Rick Flag can be seen exiting the back of a vehicle together at the 1:43 mark. It's next-to-impossible to determine when in the film this takes place. However, apart from seemingly a few other random mercenaries, the duo seems entirely separate from the rest of Task Force X. It could simply be them arriving separately at the helicopter airstrip. Then again, it could be a side mission — potentially to utilize Savant's technological hacking skills for specific ends as Flag protects and keeps him focused on the task. All the while, the others will be sent off to handle the more direct and violent action.

Bloodsport, Polka-Dot Man, Peacemaker, The Thinker, and Harley

Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker The Suicide Squad

Making a thus far rare appearance, The Thinker (Peter Capaldi) can be seen at the 1:44 mark. He's joined by Bloodsport, Polka-Dot Man, Harley Quinn, and Peacemaker. The fact Harley is in her dress indicates it's at least in the latter part of the film. That also implies that The Thinker at least makes it beyond the earliest mission attempt. As water pours in, the four appear to be making a move towards what looks to be more of a residential building. There's an unmistakable air of potentially a final stand, with each looking somewhat resolute. Bloodsport can be seen either preparing some of his equipment or preparing to attack. Peacemaker, meanwhile, seems surprisingly much calmer and merely carries a large bag.

Rick Flag and Bloodsport (+ Harley Quinn, Peacemaker, Ratcatcher, Polka-Dot Man, King Shark, and The Thinker)

Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag and Idris Elba as Bloodsport outside a building in The Suicide Squad

The first official trailer for The Suicide Squad opens with a mission to rescue Harley Quinn. Though Peacemaker argues against it, Rick Flag insists that they "never leave one of their own behind." This particular subsection of the titular group feature in several moments - from a bus en-route to the initial moments of the quest. During the latter, Flag and Bloodshot break off separately to take direct action themselves. The others (Peacemaker, King Shark, Ratcatcher 2, and The Thinker), meanwhile, set up separate positions and support over coms. The efforts prove for naught, however, with Harley Quinn revealing she'd already rescued herself. Regardless, the moment establishes that Flag doesn't view his team as disposable as Amanda Waller, as well as Bloodsport's more heroic tendencies. They can also all be seen gathered on a rooftop, seemingly inducting The Thinker into Task Force X.

Bloodsport and Peacemaker (+ Ratcatcher 2 and King Shark)

John Cena as Peacemaker and Idris Elba as Bloodsport The Suicide Squad

Peacemaker's argumentative tendencies resurface later in the same trailer. Questioning why Bloodsport isn't a more decisive leader, the pair spar verbally. The moment needs into a bizarre and imaginative scenario that serves as a testament to Gunn's twisted sense of humor. Conjured by Peacemaker, the idea soon drags Ratcatcher 2 into the discussion. As they trek through the jungles of Corto Maltese, King Shark is also silently glimpsed to be with them.

Ratcatcher 2 and Bloodsport

Ratcatcher 2 smiles and talks on the bus in The Suicide Squad

Both The Suicide Squad trailers reveal a scene on the aforementioned bus. During the ride, Ratcatcher 2 and Bloodsport are glimpsed in more casual attire. It's left unclear where they may be heading and for what reason. Their conversation, however, illuminates the heart that will lurk at the core of the movie, between the bloody and violent mayhem. Bloodsport vows that he will ensure that Ratcatcher makes it out of the mission alive, to which she offers that it'll be her doing that for him. As such, there may be honor between these criminals after all.

Peacemaker and Ratcatcher 2

Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, John Cena as Peacemaker Dancing The Suicide Squad

One element of the aforementioned scene that is answered is Ratcatcher 2's change of clothing. A separate series of scenes depict Task Force X enjoying some downtime. Taking to a local Corto Maltese club, various members can be seen frolicking. One quick flash reveals Ratcatcher and Peacemaker enjoying a dance together. While it may not be a "team up" in the strictest sense, it nonetheless conveys that at least some camaraderie will form between them. That could easily translate to some effective partnership moments when back out in the field.

Bloodsport and King Shark

Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Steve Agee and Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, The Suicide Squad

Like Harley and Polka-Dot Man above, the unlikely duo of Bloodsport and King Shark enjoy a blink-and-you-miss-it moment together. At the 1:49 mark of the second official trailer for The Suicide Squad, King Shark can be seen looking at a giant fishtank just as it breaks open. Immediately afterwards, Bloodsport can be seen getting washed down a corridor by the flooding water. Blurrily behind him, King Shark can also be seen. Given that nobody else seemed to be in the vicinity, the moment implies that the duo briefly break away from the others while inflitrating the Project Starfish facilities on Corto Maltese.

Rick Flag, The Thinker, Bloodsport, and Polka-Dot Man

The Thinker is confronted by Rick Flag and Bloodsport

A seemingly further part of The Thinker's introduction to Task Force X occurs in the second trailer. He can be seen standing with Bloodsport and Rick Flag (with Polka-Dot Man lurking just in view). Locking eyes with the former, Thinker states, "This is suicide". He's no doubt referring to whatever the team plans to do next - and directly referencing the group's more famous name. That is further illuminated by Rick Flag, who shrugs and simply responds, "That's kind of our thing". The absence of many notable figures implies many may have already given their lives in proof of that fact.

Rick Flag, Bloodsport, and Peacemaker

Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker The Suicide Squad

Seemingly set after the aforementioned sabbatical from the mission, the trio of Rick Flag, Bloodsport, and Peacemaker are glimpsed. With a fire raging behind them, and likely even more chaos in front, they not sport less fanciful (and, presumably, hastily-acquired) weaponry. "Let's get it!" Bloodsport commands, as they march forward in unison. What they are marching towards and what has happened shall remain the subject of fierce speculation and theorizing. Whatever the case, all three of them have clearly had enough and are newly resolved to bring things to a bloody conclusion.

The Thinker and Polka-Dot Man (+ Ratcatcher 2?)

Polka-Dot Man places a hand on The Thinker's shoulder

Another aftermath of the more light-hearted festivities introduces the unique pairing of Polka-Dot Man and The Thinker. What is actually going on is impossible to determine, but with a serious expression, Polka-Dot Man places an ominous hand on Thinker's shoulder. The move prompts a brilliantly bemused reaction from the latter. Also in the scene is a female presence that matches the appearance of Ratcatcher 2 but could also turn out to be an entirely separate character. Either way, despite everything else, Thinker keeps his eyes firmly locked on her.

Ratcatcher 2, Rick Flag, and The Thinker

An image of Ratcatcher 2, Rick Flag, and The Thinker standing together in The Suicide Squad

The second trailer for The Suicide Squad reveals more of the group's infiltration of Project Starfish. A lift door opens to reveal that Rick Flag, Ratcatcher 2, and The Thinker make to the lower levels. While Flag is armed and wary, Ratcatcher (now with a titular rodent on her shoulder) looks merely curious. Thinker, meanwhile, doesn't seem to care. The moment is connected to a shot of various people locked in cages. Based on the expressions of the characters, this could indeed be what the elevator doors open onto. Then again, it could merely be trickery on Gunn's part, with a bigger surprise in store for audiences. Whatever the case, the trio will make for an interesting one to watch interact.

Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, David Dastmalchian as Polka Dot Man, and Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Starro Escape The Suicide Squad

A climactic moment from the first trailer for The Suicide Squad reveals the escape of Starro the Conqueror from his below-ground confines. It's unclear when exactly in the movie's runtime that this event will occur. Still, whether it be due to their deaths or other reasons, most of the team aren't present. The only ones seen are King Shark, Ratcatcher 2, Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, and Polka-Dot Man. The same collective is later seen in the second trailer, as the ones openly battling Starro on the streets of Corto Maltese. Again, during those moments, no other members of Task Force X were seen. As to where they may be or what happened to them, fans will no doubt furiously theorize.

Javelin, King Shark, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn, TDK, Polka-Dot Man, Rick Flag, and Peacemaker

Javelin, King Shark, Boomerang, Harley Quinn, TDK, Polka-Dot Man, Flagg, and Peacemaker The Suicide Squad

Returning to the DC FanDome footage, the final glimpse similarly offers a much more unified version of Task Force X. However, there are still a few characters seemingly missing. Glimpsed at 1:46 in the first trailer, those definitively present are Javelin, King Shark (pre-CGI), Boomerang, Harley Quinn, TDK, Polka-Dot Man, Flag, and Peacemaker. Each appears to be looking up towards something and ready for action. The expressions on their faces shed light on some of their individual personalities. While some are intent and focused, others look somewhat scared. Conversely, Harley Quinn looks insanely excited. Equally, her being in her original attire poses more questions regarding the timeline, especially given some of those present.

It also begs the question of what they are targeting? The most likely answer would be Starro spores, confirming a bodysnatch theory. That would explain some of the slightly different directions the squad's weapons are facing. Then again, it could be something else entirely. Whatever the case, it looks to be an interesting play on the traditional group hero shot. The movie is just over a month away from release. Regardless, there's no doubt be much more to be revealed regarding the overall plot, tone, and character interactions. Still, The Suicide Squad already promises a wealth of uniquely fun sub-teams to look forward to.
