Sylvester Stallone posted a new The Suicide Squad behind the scenes image of himself and John Cena’s Peacemaker. In order to make his The Suicide Squad a fresh comic book offering and also distance it from the heavily criticized 2016 Suicide Squad, James Gunn has created an R-rated “war movie” that has taken influence from films like Saving Private Ryan and features tons of character deaths. Also, keeping in line with the director’s knack for humor and unorthodox characters, he introduces new faces like the man who will kill for peace, Peacemaker (Cena), and the Stallone voiced humanoid shark, King Shark (or Nanaue), a loveable yet deadly fish.

The Suicide Squad will see Cena’s Peacemaker and Stallone’s King Shark, alongside the rest of the Task Force X, embark on a dangerous mission to Corto Maltese, where they will encounter the giant villain Starro. The film drops on HBO Max and in theaters on August 5, and promotion for the DC project has officially kicked into high gear, with Cena even continuing his odd tradition of donning the Peacemaker costume for interviews (and general daily activities), like in his recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. But Cena, Stallone, and various other cast members are continuing to promote to film, which has been made evident by various social media posts.

Stallone, as he so often does, took to Instagram to update fans on his latest release, The Suicide Squad. The legendary Hollywood star posted an amusing behind-the-scenes selfie of himself and an animated Cena in his Peacemaker costume with his gun in hand as they were doing the Good Morning America show. In the post, Stallone also praised Cena, the “other cast members,” and Gunn. Full post can be seen below:

The image, as well as being a fun coming together of two big stars, also unites two of the most talked about characters in The Suicide Squad. King Shark’s slightly foolish actions in the various trailers and TV spots make him feel like the Groot of this Gunn tale, although a much more violent and bloodthirsty version. Peacemaker, on the other hand, has been spotlighted due to his obscure/extreme character beliefs that are elevated by Cena’s comedic instincts to create the “douchey Captain America.” In addition to this, Cena’s Peacemaker also has a spinoff TV show that Gunn has written and partly directed, which will explore the character’s origins. So seeing both Stallone and Cena together, especially with Cena in his Peacemaker costume, is a nice way to continue increasing the fan excitement to see the two actors work in The Suicide Squad.

Thus far, critics have praised the film for its characters, violence, and unpredictability, with many holding out special praise for Stallone’s King Shark too. Gunn recently stated that he set out to create an “ultimate all-time comic book movie,” and it appears he may have accomplished that while successfully introducing new characters like Cena’s Peacemaker and Stallone’s King Shark. Like Stallone reminds fans in his Instagram post, it’s not long now until The Suicide Squad releases, but to continue adding to the fan excitement, Peacemaker and King Shark (in human form) united.
