James Gunn confirmed that Peacemaker has a sword in The Suicide Squad. Gunn’s soft reboot of 2016's Suicide Squad is set to return a few characters from David Ayer’s divisive predecessor, such as Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). However, Gunn would be remiss not to introduce new characters, which include Bloodsport (Idris Elba), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Savant (Michael Rooker), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), and The Thinker (Peter Capaldi).

John Cena’s Peacemaker is perhaps the most notable newcomer to Task Force X. Long before the character was even seen in The Suicide Squad, HBO Max ordered a solo Peacemaker series which is currently in production from Gunn. Described as a "douchey Captain America” who believes in peace at any cost, even if it means killing everyone, Peacemaker will certainly fit in with Suicide Squad’s team of nutty ex-cons.

Peacemaker’s sword was seen briefly in the DC FanDome Exclusive Sneak peek, but a recent photo shared by director James Gunn drew attention to Peacemaker’s unexpected weapon of choice. The photo showed a set of Suicide Squad figurines from McFarlane Toys. Characters featured in the set are Peacemaker, Bloodsport, King Shark, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, and Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian). A user noticed Peacemaker’s weapon and asked, “Peacemaker has a sword?” and Gunn confirmed, “He does.”

While Peacemaker is usually associated with his signature long-barreled pistol, his sword could be seen in some previous promotional material, and this photo of McFarlane's figurine set provides the best look at it so far. Since Gunn has said that nearly all the characters in the film will die, many began speculating that those featured in the photo would be the Suicide Squad’s last surviving members, but Gunn quickly shot that theory down.

It’s unclear why Peacemaker would be brandishing a sword in lieu of his pistol, but perhaps the team has run out of ammunition and he and Bloodsport have to resort to melee weapons. It’s also unclear where and how Peacemaker obtains the sword, but since it doesn’t appear to be a contemporary weapon, the Nazi-era prison which the Suicide Squad is expected to visit in the film is a pretty good bet. The mystery surrounding Peacemaker's sword will be revealed on The Suicide Squad's fast-approaching release date on August 6.
