The Suicide Squad director James Gunn says the new spin-off centered on John Cena's Peacemaker doesn't confirm whether he lives or dies in the film. Gunn's take on the DC anti-hero team will introduce several new characters while also featuring some holdovers from the 2016 Suicide SquadFor months, Gunn kept the new Task Force X's roster under wraps, but he finally unveiled it in August at DC FanDome. The Suicide Squad will feature several lesser-known DC characters, from Bloodsport (Idris Elba) to Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian). Wrestler-turned-actor Cena will play Peacemaker, a man who is so determined to achieve peace, he'll kill to get it.

Peacemaker is tapped to be one of The Suicide Squad's MVPs, as news broke on Wednesday that he'll be getting an HBO Max spin-off show. Cena and Gunn will collaborate on the project, which has already received a straight-to-series order and will begin production in early 2021. So far, plot details are being kept under wraps, but the initial announcement shared Peacemaker will explore the character's origins. This has led some fans to wonder about when exactly the show will take place, since Gunn has already teased The Suicide Squad has a high body count.

Gunn addressed the timeline question on social media following the announcement and said it'll be some time before fans get an idea of when Peacemaker will take place. "We’re holding off announcing the timeline of the #Peacemaker TV show until after #TheSuicideSquad movie," Gunn wrote in response to a fan assuming this means Peacemaker survives to the end of The Suicide Squad. Another fan pointed out that the announcement said the series would explore Peacemaker's origins, to which Gunn said, "'Exploring the origins' does not necessarily mean prequel."

This move makes a lot of sense, since Peacemaker's apparent survival would be a pretty big spoiler. Since Gunn went to such great lengths to just keep Peacemaker and the other characters under wraps, he definitely wouldn't want to reveal which people are destined to survive The Suicide Squad. No doubt the creation of Peacemaker will lead to fervent speculation among fans, and not just when it comes to its place in the timeline.

Since the series was reportedly a result of Warner Bros. becoming fond of Cena's performance, it could be that Peacemaker does in fact die in The Suicide Squad, and the execs wished to find a new way to keep him around. On the other hand, it could be the opposite: He lives through The Suicide Squad, and he'll be the star of several future projects. At this point, it's too soon to know for sure, though fans will surely find out more about Peacemaker once The Suicide Squad arrives next August.
