The Suicide Squad is headed back to the big screen, but things will be different with James Gunn as director, and here's everything we know so far. In 2016, director David Ayer brought fans Suicide Squad, the first DCEU movie not centered on Batman and/or Superman. Many looked forward to Margot Robbie becoming the first to bring Harley Quinn to life in live-action, and while most would agree she lived up to expectations, the movie as a whole did not.

As we've learned more and more about in the years since though, the blame for Suicide Squad's failings shouldn't necessarily fall at Ayer's feet, as Warner Bros. and DC saw fit to meddle heavily with the final product. It's getting to the point where some fans are actively calling for the release of Suicide Squad's Ayer cut, in much the same way millions used to demand for the release of Zack Snyder's version of Justice League. Whether or not the Ayer cut ever materializes though, it's important to remember that Suicide Squad was an enormous financial success.

Thus, DC has opted to make a quasi-sequel to Suicide Squad, featuring a few returning characters alongside new antiheroes, with Guardians of the Galaxy maestro Gunn at the helm. Here's what we know to expect so far.

The Suicide Squad Release Date

The Suicide Squad is currently scheduled to release in theaters on August 6, 2021, a prime summer slot for any other year, but it still remains to be seen how much different the summer movie season might still look in 2021. The film has at least already completed filming, so barring extensive reshoots, a release delay seems unlikely. As far as DC movies go, The Suicide Squad shares 2021 with The Batman, Black Adam, and the Snyder Cut.

The Suicide Squad Cast

The Suicide Squad has boasted an interesting cast line-up from the beginning, but for the longest time, most of their roles were unconfirmed. That was until the highly successful DC FanDome event, where James Gunn revealed a "roll call" of everyone in the main cast. Returning are Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. New to the cast of The Suicide Squad are Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Pete Davidon as Blackguard, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Michael Rooker as Savant, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Steve Agee as King Shark, Sean Gunn as Weasel, and Flula Borg as Javelin. Taika Waititi also plays an as yet unrevealed role.

While more details about The Suicide Squad's characters were recently revealed, its plot is still being kept under wraps. Gunn has made it known that he read every single comic featuring the Suicide Squad to prepare for the film, and that he's crafted a spiritual sequel to the original comic series. Gunn has also said that seeing the first Suicide Squad won't be required to understand the new movie, and that his version will be much more violent. Starro is also rumored to be the big bad.
