James Gunn has asked excited fans to please be patient for the release of The Suicide Squad trailer. The upcoming standalone sequel to David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad began filming in September of 2019 with some of the cast from the original film returning (minus, most notably, Jared Leto and Will Smith, who will not appear in Gunn's film). Gunn was available to make the leap from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he's directed both Guardians of the Galaxy films, to the DC Extended Universe after he was fired from the upcoming Vol. 3. However, Gunn has since been brought back on board at Marvel.

In The Suicide Squad, the team, aka, Task Force X, are sent by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) on a new mission to the South American island of Corto Maltese. There, they have to destroy Jotunheim, a Nazi-era prison and laboratory. Gunn has previously described The Suicide Squad as being inspired by gritty, old war movies. The film boasts an impressive cast of newcomers to the franchise, including Idris Elba as Bloodsport and John Cena as Peacemaker. Taika Waititi and Sylvester Stallone will also star in undisclosed roles, which has DCEU fans and even fans of Gunn's work in the MCU excited to see more from the movie.

After being asked on Twitter when fans could expect a first glimpse of The Suicide Squad trailer, Gunn took a page from Yoda and preached patience:

There hasn't been much in the way of footage so far, with the most lengthy look coming from the DC FanDome The Suicide Squad trailer that debuted back in August. While that was definitely an intriguing and exciting first look at the film, it was not an official trailer, and fans are hoping to get their hands on that soon. Gunn seemed to indicate he's working hard on teases for the movie, and perhaps even more, so hopefully fans won't have to wait much longer.

Unfortunately for fans who want him just working on new promotional footage, after wrapping post-production on The Suicide Squad, Gunn is already filming a Peacemaker spinoff for HBO Max will Cena. Gunn wrote all 8 episodes of the series and will be directing a handful as well, including the premiere. As soon as Gunn then wraps on Peacemaker, he'll return to the MCU for the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a Disney+ exclusive launching Christmas 2022, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set for a 2023 release. All told, Gunn has his hands full, but he's confident there's still room for a The Suicide Squad trailer ahead of its release.
