Update! Read our breakdown of The Suicide Squad trailer.

Warner Bros. releases The Suicide Squad movie trailer, revealing the first real look at James Gunn's DC Extended Universe film. A quasi-sequel to David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad, Gunn's film brings back some characters already introduced to the DCEU - including Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang - while sending them on a mission with a host of new anti-heroes. When Gunn unveiled The Suicide Squad cast list, he warned fans not to get too attached to all the characters, indicating the DC movie will live up to its title. As was the case in Ayer's 2016 film, The Suicide Squad will see a group of villains/anti-heroes team up under the orders of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who implants chips in their necks to prevent them from going off mission.

With The Suicide Squad set to release in August, the big push of the marketing campaign has yet to get into full swing, but Gunn and his cast had a presence at last summer's online fan event, DC FanDome. During the movie's panel, Gunn confirmed who each cast member is playing and revealed character posters for the full roster. Plus, The Suicide Squad DC FanDome behind-the-scenes video offered a look at the cast while they were filming Gunn's movie. Since then, bits of footage for The Suicide Squad have been included in larger promos for HBO Max, due to the movie releasing on the streaming service and in theaters this summer - but now the first trailer has finally arrived.

Today, Warner Bros. debuted The Suicide Squad trailer, which can be seen below. Though the video does a good job of introducing the majority of the characters in the movie, it does focus a bit more on certain Task Force X members, including Robbie's fan-favorite Harley Quinn as well as new additions Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Peacemaker (John Cena). The teaser also features plenty of King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Joel Kinnaman's return as Rick Flag and Michael Rooker's Savant, while also teasing the DC villain Starro. Check out The Suicide Squad movie trailer below.

As seen in the trailer, it seems there will be a few different lineups of Task Force X in The Suicide Squad, with three distinct teams featured throughout the video. There's one that consists of Weasel (Sean Gunn), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Mongal (Mayling Ng), Javelin (Flula Borg), Captain Boomerang, T.D.K. (Nathan Fillion), Harley Quinn, Savant and Flag. Then another team featuring Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior). And lastly, there appears to be another iteration of the team that combines members of the other ones, plus Harley Quinn and Peter Capaldi's Thinker, who take on the massive starfish-looking villain from the DC comics, Starro. A brief shot of Starro can be seen on the screen in Waller's command center, and then a glimpse at the alien lifeform's arm a moment later.

Based on the different iterations of Task Force X and Gunn's comment back when he announced The Suicide Squad cast, it's fair to assume some, if not many of these characters die on their mission. Given what's shown in the trailer, it's possible that Flag leads his first team on a mission and everyone aside from him and Harley Quinn get killed, while Robbie's character gets captured. Then Waller sends in Bloodsport's team, who goes to rescue Harley - only to find she's escaped - and then they proceed to enlist the help of Thinker to take on Starro. But, until more is revealed about The Suicide Squad's storyline, it remains to be seen exactly how the movie will play out. For now, The Suicide Squad trailer previews a fun and funny DC movie that's in line with Gunn's sensibilities as a writer and director. And those interested in checking it out will be able to do so when it releases in August.
