Actor Joel Kinnaman says his character of Rick Flag is unrecognizable in The Suicide Squad. The film is a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad, although it's intended to be a soft reboot. The Suicide Squad is directed by Guardian of the Galaxy's James Gunn, who's apparently shot the film with a much more lighthearted tone.

Not much is currently known about the central plot of The Suicide Squad. However, it's been revealed that Warner Bros. executives had little feedback when watching the director's cut, something that is nearly unheard of when it comes to a blockbuster of this magnitude. In addition, The Suicide Squad will feature a roster of both new and old characters, with Kinnaman's Rick Flag, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn among the familiar faces who will be returning. And it sounds like audiences will see a new side to at least one character they've already met.

In an exclusive interview to Screen Rant, Kinnaman says Rick Flag is completely different from the first film and has a more comedic tone. When asked, Kinnaman says he was able to cut loose in a way that he wasn't able to in the first film. However, that's not to say that shooting wasn't grueling; Kinnaman describes doing "10 takes on a simple line" to ensure that he'd caught the right tone. Still, while Kinnaman doesn't go into specifics, he does emphasize that the experience was incredibly "fun, light, and easy."

Kinnaman also highlights that The Suicide Squad is entirely James Gunn's vision, which is different than that of David Ayer's, who directed the preceding Suicide Squad movie. For one, Gunn has taken a more comedic direction with this project and Kinnaman underscores that Gunn came in with a clear picture of what he hoped to produce. Even though this vision seems to involve revamping certain characters, Kinnaman appears to have no regrets about the process nor the evolution that Rick Flag. If anything, Kinnaman seems incredibly proud of the Rick Flag he's helped portray this time around, which is sure to be startlingly different than the stringent military-minded colonel that viewers saw in the 2016 Suicide Squad.

While there seem to be a myriad of changes coming to The Suicide Squad, the cast and crew seem to have embraced these wholeheartedly. Even though cast members are keeping key storylines and details a mystery for now, the comedic underbelly of The Suicide Squad is apparent. As such, Rick Flag might not be the only one in the soft reboot who has adapted a more lighthearted persona, although it remains to be seen how the other characters have evolved to fit James Gunn's vision.
