Director James Gunn has released a vibrant and explosive The Suicide Squad movie poster, showing off the new team's arsenal of weapons. The much-anticipated DC Extended Universe movie releases its first trailer on Friday, as revealed by Gunn on Twitter Thursday evening. The movie is a sequel/reboot to David Ayer's divisive 2016 Suicide Squad and introduces a whole new rogues gallery of DC villains to the mix alongside some returning faces from the first movie.

John Cena's Peacemaker and Idris Elba's Bloodsport seem to be the main new characters in Gunn's version of The Suicide Squad, alongside Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), as well as Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, who returns to marshal the erratic team of anti-heroes. The rest of the cast includes the likes of Michael Rooker (Savant), Pete Davidson (Blackguard), Jai Courtney (returning as Captain Boomerang), Nathan Fillion (T.D.K), Taika Waititi, and even Sylvester Stallone. Little is known of the plot, besides Gunn pitching the movie as an insane 1970s war movie-inspired action movie with a healthy dose of his trademark humor.

Now, Gunn has released a vibrant new poster for The Suicide Squad, posting it to Twitter less than an hour before the very first red band trailer for the film releases. The image features Elba, Cena, Kinnaman and Robbie's characters prominently, all wielding their own unique weapons. Bloodsport's are particularly insane, featuring what look special attachments to allow him to shoot three bullets from each gun at a time. Daniela Melchior's Ratcatcher 2, David Dastmalchian's Polka-Dot Man and Steve Agee's King Shark also appear, while the entire scene is wreathed in a giant explosion. The poster's tagline "they're dying to save the world" adds a new wrinkle to the movie's marketing campaign, as it seems to hint that the heroes are not safe from being killed off. The sentiment here seems to be that The Suicide Squad has some real stakes for the DC characters, and may end up killing off a lot of them, if not all, which fits in with their moniker. Hopefully, though, one or two of them survive to reprise their roles in future DC movies.

Cena is already reprising the role of Peacemaker for an HBO Max spinoff show releasing January 2022, though it's thought to be a prequel, so even he isn't safe. Besides the impressive weapons on display, the poster is fairly standard for what audiences have come to expect from a Gunn movie. It's exciting news for fans, as The Suicide Squad is shaping up to be one of the weirdest and most action-packed DC superhero movies ever.
