Director James Gunn confirms The Suicide Squad won't have any reshoots. The Suicide Squad marks the second time Warner Bros. has attempted to bring the anti-hero team to the big screen, with David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad being the very first. Despite some very positive pre-release buzz, Suicide Squad failed to impress fans and critics because of its jumbled tone and confusing character arcs. Now, Guardians of the Galaxy helmer Gunn has taken over as writer and director, and fans are very excited to see what he will do with the property.
The Suicide Squad wrapped filming earlier this year, making it one of the few major productions to avoid any coronavirus-related issues. In recent months, Warner Bros. has rearranged its DCEU release calendar multiple times, but The Suicide Squad has so far managed to hold onto its August 2021 premiere. Gunn has been in the process of completing post-production work, and he was even able to share a behind the scenes peek at DC FanDome in August. Now, it sounds like The Suicide Squad is approaching one of its final milestones.
As he has throughout the entire filmmaking process, Gunn recently updated fans on where The Suicide Squad is at currently. In addition to confirming The Suicide Squad is nearing picture lock (which is essentially when the film is finished in the editing process and moving onto the final post-production stages), Gunn revealed there won't be any reshoots for the film. Gunn said this when a fan pointed out most films have reshoots scheduled in ahead of time, and while The Suicide Squad did have reshoots planned, "we’re latching the movie this week (that’s picture locking with the exception of shifting things around for still-incoming VFX shots) without having shot any."
Considering how most big budget films are struggling to keep production going amid the pandemic, this is good news for The Suicide Squad. Between its August 2021 premiere and filming wrapping up at the start of this year, The Suicide Squad is just about the only DC film to remain virtually untouched by the pandemic (save for a potentially slower post-production process). Provided nothing else gets in the way, the highly-anticipated project can still arrive on time next year.
That'll come as a major relief for fans, particularly since The Suicide Squad has remained shrouded in mystery for some time. While Gunn shared the full Task Force X list at DC FanDome, plot details are still being kept under wraps. Perhaps when The Suicide Squad is officially, completely done, Warner Bros. will release the first real trailer for the film and provide some additional clues about what the titular team is going up against. With several months to go before the film itself is released, fans will want every little detail they can get.
