The Suicide Squad will be bigger than the Guardians of the Galaxy films in terms of scope and production, as stated by director James Gunn. The Suicide Squad, which continues the story of the super villains of the DC universe, is expected for a 2021 release and is the next DCEU film to release after Wonder Woman 1984.

The new installment sees many of the stars from 2016's Suicide Squad reprising their roles, including Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis, while also welcoming newcomers to the series, including Idris Elba, John Cena, Storm Reid, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Pete Davidson, Michael Rooker and Alice Braga. The film serves as an addition to the growing list of DC superhero films from the past decade but is one of the first films to act as a sequel to DC's comics rather than to its cinematic predecessor. The film is directed by James Gunn, who rose to prominence with his three successful installments of the Guardian of the Galaxy series.

Gunn, along with members of The Suicide Squad cast, showed off the first look at the new film during DC Fandome, a live-streaming event showcasing many of Warner Bros.' upcoming DC films. During their panel, a behind-the-scenes featurette for The Suicide Squad screened and in it, Gunn said of the movie: "It’s gonna be different from any superhero movie ever made. This is by far the biggest movie I’ve ever made." With its bold costumes, set designs and special effects, The Suicide Squad sure looks like a big production, but bigger than any movie he's made before - and that includes both Guardians installments he's helmed for Marvel - is really saying something.

Similar to The Suicide Squad, the Guardians of the Galaxy movies feature a large ensemble, but Task Force X's 13 members dwarfs the five-member Guardians team. By the size of the cast alone it's obvious The Suicide Squad is a much bigger movie, but its many and often ludicrous choice of characters (Polka-Dot Man, really?) also indicate how much creative freedom Gunn has been given. Gunn was allowed to be bigger and bolder with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 after proving he could make a hit with the first film, and it only stands to reason Warner Bros.' took into account the success of both Marvel movies when giving him the reins to The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad has all the ingredients to be a totally insane, raucous adventure with a cast of zany characters unlike ever seen on screen before. The action teased in the behind-the-scenes footage looks over the top and explosive, suggesting set pieces just as wild as the movie's cast of characters. Helmed by a director like Gunn given the liberty to make as crazy of a move as he can imagine, there's little doubt The Suicide Squad will be the DCEU's most ambitious entry yet.
