The Suicide Squad image features Harley Quinn and the gang literally on the run. David Ayer brought the DC antihero team the Suicide Squad to life in the original 2016 film, but for the 2021 sequel James Gunn was brought on to write and direct instead.

Though the first Suicide Squad was a big hit with over $700 million at the worldwide box office, the movie was maligned by critics and rejected by a lot of DC comics fans. Now everyone is hoping that Gunn will bring to the sequel the elements that were missing when Ayer directed his version. Some characters from the first movie will of course be back, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. But there will be a whole bunch of new characters introduced in Gunn’s sequel, with John Cena’s Peacemaker generating the most buzz (indeed Peacemaker has already landed his own spinoff streaming series with Gunn at the helm).

As excitement ramps up for the first post-COVID summer movie season, USA Today has released a new image from Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Peacemaker isn’t in this particular shot, but Harley Quinn is alongside her fellow squad members Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), King Shark (Steve Agee) and Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian). The image needless to say is not spoilery as it simply shows the above characters running up the street. Knowing these characters, it’s likely they’re running into some kind of danger rather than away from it (they’re not called the Suicide Squad for nothing). The image is just one more thing for fans to digest as they continue getting hyped up for the arrival of Gunn’s take on the DC antiheroes. Indeed, a recent poll from IMDb showed that The Suicide Squad is the most highly anticipated upcoming DC title of them all.

A big part of that excitement is of course a reaction to the letdown that was the first Suicide Squad movie. Not that all DC fans were let down by the film; indeed, recently there has been a call for Ayer’s cut of the movie to come out just as Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League finally saw the light of day. Suffice it to say, Warner Bros. has no intention of releasing the Ayer Cut with a whole new Suicide Squad getting set to hit theaters and HBO Max. The good news is, Gunn has a great handle on oddball comic book characters as he demonstrated with Guardians of the Galaxy. The studio seems to have given Gunn a great deal of freedom on The Suicide Squad so hopefully the film won’t feel compromised the way the 2016 film did. All indications so far are that Gunn’s vision of Harley Quinn, Peacemaker, King Shark and the rest of the movie’s insane characters is going to result in a very satisfying experience.
