James Gunn reveals his first DC movie, The Suicide Squad, is nearly finished. After 2016's Suicide Squad failed to impress fans and critics, it became apparent that the property would require a different approach on the big screen. Gunn, best known for directing Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy movies, was brought in to write The Suicide Squad in late 2018; later, he was confirmed to be the director as well. Since then, anticipation has steadily built for Gunn's R-rated take on the Suicide Squad, which looks to be quite different from the 2016 movie. In fact, aside from retaining a few characters from the original movie, The Suicide Squad will be separate from what came before.

Ever since The Suicide Squad completed production in early 2020, fans have been eager for peeks at the film. Gunn has shared some tantalizing teases on social media, and recent months have seen the releases of a behind the scenes Suicide Squad featurette, some first look images, and the complete cast roster. However, as the movie is scheduled for an August release, a proper trailer has yet to debut online. Recently, though, fans were able to catch a glimpse of some Suicide Squad characters in an HBO Max teaser.

As fans grow more impatient for new Suicide Squad content, Gunn took to social media to provide some updates. In addition to asking for patience regarding the first trailer, Gunn revealed he is "a hair’s-breadth from being completely finished." The director has been working on post-production since filming completed last year, and after all this time, it's nearly finished.

This confirms The Suicide Squad is one of the few DC films to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic relatively unscathed. Though it will be released on HBO Max in addition to theaters as a result of Warner Bros.' 2021 plan, The Suicide Squad avoided production delays and premiere reschedulings. Considering how much the DCEU's calendar has shifted over the past few months, this is quite the feat. The pandemic might have slowed post-production, but clearly, Gunn had the time, even as he began work on the Suicide Squad spin-off Peacemaker. Soon enough, he'll have a finished movie on his hands.

Between the completion of the film and the August date holding firm, it does seem likely that a Suicide Squad trailer will debut soon. Of course, that will depend on Warner Bros. and how soon they wish to begin promoting the film. Even without the presence of new footage, though, it's thrilling to know The Suicide Squad is approaching this major milestone. Audiences are very excited to see this one, and it just might avoid some of the major obstacles that have struck films in recent months. Here's hoping Gunn's final adjustments go well.
