Fans shouldn't expect official The Suicide Squad character details anytime soon, according to director James Gunn. Created first by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru, the first version of the supervillain-turned-antihero team debuted in 1959. They were later (and more prominently) reformed by John Ostrander in 1987's Legends #3. The film will serve as both a sequel and somewhat of a soft reboot of David Ayers' 2016 original, Suicide Squad.

A number of original stars were previously confirmed to be returning - including Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman. Gunn assumed directorial duties in the wake of being fired by Disney and Marvel Studios over some controversial comments. The company ultimately reversed their decision, however, opting to allow Gunn to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and conclude his trilogy - but not before he has finished work on The Suicide Squad. Despite that, and the fact The Suicide Squad is scheduled to start filming this month, details have remained relatively scarce.

Gunn, however, recently unveiled the full official cast list for the film, while simultaneously declaring that people shouldn't get too attached. As well as the already confirmed names, the list included a mixture of new names and actors long-rumored - such as frequent collaborator Nathan Fillion. In a follow-up tweet, however, Gunn revealed that it'll be sometime before people learn which characters the majority of the actors will actually be playing. In a follow-up tweet, the director stated that he was "simply focused on MAKING the greatest movie" that he could, rather than promoting it. Both of Gunn's posts, the first of which responded directly to a fan's question, can be seen in the space below:

As Gunn himself conveyed, some character announcements have already been revealed. The already established characters listed above will be joined by Task Force X newcomers Ratcatcher (played by Daniela Melchior) and Polka-Dot Man (played by David Dastmalchian). Others, meanwhile, have been subject to more minor reveals - such as Peter Capaldi having revealed that his character is totally bald and requires heavy prosthetics. Others have already been the subject of fierce speculation. For example, Steve Agee had been heavily rumored to be playing King Shark. Gunn's own comments, however, now throw considerable doubt on any such reports. One character fans can cross off their list, though, is Zatanna, who Gunn declared that he'd never even considered.

Then again, many will no doubt question the mere validity of Gunn's statements. After all, it wasn't long ago that it was denied that Michael Rooker had a part in the film, only for him to appear on the official cast list. Aside from the obligatory Mary Poppins jokes, Rooker's part remains as much of a mystery as the others. Whatever the case, there is a vast well of DC characters for the acclaimed writer/director to pull from. As such, fans will no doubt have a field day continuing to debate and speculate in the lead up to official The Suicide Squad announcements or footage emerging
