Most Of the Main Cast Are Returning For Suicide Squad 2

Suicide Squad 2 will pick up with Task Force X, so naturally, the majority of the surviving villains will be back. The sequel is rumored to see Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as Joker, while Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) and Jay Hernandez (Diablo) have all been training for production. The latter's character died in the first film, but the actor has hinted there were ways to bring his character back to life, given his metahuman status.

It's not been suggested, but the likes of Karen Fukuhara’s Katana and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller are also likely to be returning.

Not returning for Suicide Squad 2 will be Cara Delevigne's Enchantress. Delevingne said that she didn't think it made sense for the character to return.

Dwayne Johnson Could Be Suicide Squad 2's Villain

With Enchantress not returning, a new villain is needed for Suicide Squad 2. One rumor suggests that role will be filled by Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam. Johnson has been linked to the role for years and was long-expected to take it on in Shazam! before rumors of a solo Black Adam movie began to stir. However, the most recent reports say that he'll debut in Suicide Squad 2, with the team hunting him down.

Suicide Squad 2's Story Is A Mystery

Aside from the Black Adam rumors, there have been no confirmed details surrounding the story for Suicide Squad 2. However, there have been multiple reports suggesting the Joker/Harley relationship will continue to be explored; director David Ayer has previously stated that the original film’s ending set up Suicide Squad 2. If this is still the plan, then it's likely to unfold alongside whatever the main quest is.

Suicide Squad 2 Will Be Directed By Gavin O'Connor

David Ayer will not be back for Suicide Squad 2, which led to a major director hunt. Mel Gibson was an early frontrunner for the director's chair, before sights were set on The Shallows' Jaume Collet-Serra, who passed in order to helm Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Jonshon and Emily Blunt.

The job has finally fallen to Gavin O’Connor, best known for his films Warrior and The Accountant. The latter starred Ben Affleck (the DCEU Batman) and went on to become the most-rented film of 2017. Alongside Suicide Squad 2, O'Connor is rumored to be attached for a third movie, and is also linked to a reboot of The Green Hornet and a sequel to The Accountant.

A Lot Of Writers Have Worked On Suicide Squad 2

In addition to directing, O'Connor is also set to write the script for Suicide Squad 2. However, he's not the first name attached to the project. Zak Penn, a long-standing Marvel movie writer (The Incredible Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand, Elektra) who wrote the screenplay for Ready Player One, worked on a treatment, while Adam Cozad and Anthony Tambakis have writing credits, although it's unclear how much of early developments will remain in the finished product.

Suicide Squad 2 May Not Shoot Before 2019

Despite being part of Warner Bros' DCEU plans since the first movie, Suicide Squad 2 has had a slow development, with little concrete word nearly two years on from the original. It's been repeatedly suggested it will shoot in 2018, but with WB moving forward on a Harley Quinn Birds of Prey movie first it's assumed the movie will be pushed back to film in 2019. This would suggest the Suicide Squad 2 is going to release in 2020, four years after the original.

There Are A Lot Of Other Suicide Squad-Related Movies In The Works

Several of the proposed stars of Suicide Squad 2 have other DCEU films in the works. Margot Robbie has been linked to no less than four Harley Quinn films: in addition to the Suicide Squad sequel, there's Gotham City Sirens, Birds of Prey, a Harley standalone, and a Joker/Harley movie, with Birds of Prey moving forward. At one point, a Deadshot spinoff was also in consideration, though that has apparently been canceled. There have also been rumors of a Joker origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix, although as the casting indicates that wouldn't be part of the shared universe.

David Ayer previously stated that there could be an "infinite" number of Suicide Squad-related spinoffs, and there certainly seem to be plenty in the works right now.

Suicide Squad 2 Will Be A Different Feeling Movie

Suicide Squad was a big success, but that doesn't mean Suicide Squad 2 will just be repeating what happened before. The film had a turbulent production, with the script written in just six weeks and it later subjected to extensive, tone-changing reshoots. The finished product received a thrashing by critics despite its large box office. Joel Kinneman has expressed that everyone felt they had "lightning in a bottle" with Suicide Squad, but that they let the moment slip through their fingers. He's since said that Suicide Squad 2 will be more grounded, with "less sorcery". What this means for the Black Adam rumors is unclear.

There Is No Suicide Squad 2 Trailer Yet

Given the film has yet to begin production and the cast has yet to be announced, a trailer for the film can’t be expected anytime soon. The earliest the Suicide Squad 2 trailer could be expected would be early 2019, depending on proposed release date.

There Is No Poster For Suicide Squad 2 Yet

There is not yet an official poster of title art for Suicide Squad 2. The film’s predecessor made a splash with its series of brightly colored, minimalistic posters featuring the silhouettes of its antihero crime-fighting team as skulls. A variant poster depicted the cast standing in the shape of a messy smile, still with a chaos of color surrounding the poster. Given how successful that campaign proved to be, it wouldn't be surprising to see something similar for the sequel.
