James Gunn, director of the upcoming The Suicide Squad, says the film will use practical costumes instead of CGI ones. The Suicide Squad serves as a soft reboot of the property following the critical misfire that was 2016's Suicide Squad. While that film was a box office hit, it failed to connect with viewers and was panned by critics. To revitalize the franchise, Warner Bros. brought Gunn on to write and direct after he was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (though he has since been rehired).

Plot details are largely unknown, though fans have tried to draw conclusions based on teases from Gunn, set photos, and the lengthy cast list. Returning cast members from the 2016 film include Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis. Beyond them, there will be lots of fresh faces joining the DC universe, including John Cena, Idris Elba, Taika Waititi, Nathan Fillion, Alice Braga, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson and Peter Capaldi. Early set photos showed Fillion and Davidson in costume, leading fans to speculate about what could happen in the film.

For his part, Gunn has continued to offer little tidbits about The Suicide Squad's production. During a Q&A session on his Instagram, Gunn was asked if he would be using real suits or CGI ones in the film. His answer was quick and to the point: "All practical."

In this age of superhero movies, it's not uncommon for films to use CGI to create some characters' suits. A notable example of this is Tom Holland's Spider-Man, whose suit often has to be CGI-ed for action sequences. A common criticism aimed at superhero films is that they have a tendency to rely on a lot of visual effects. While it's necessary in some sequences, it can make for a negative moviegoing experience if audiences feel there is too much. It's nice to know that Gunn will try to avoid using CGI for elements that might not necessarily need it. Gunn has previously said The Suicide Squad will have more practical effects and sets than any of his previous films.

Gunn's involvement with The Suicide Squad has given fans some hope that it will be better than the previous film. Kinnaman has said Gunn's script is more comedic than Suicide Squad, which is refreshing news since one of the complaints people had towards Suicide Squad was that its tone was all over the place. Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy films are often considered among the best MCU films, so hopefully he'll be able to recreate that magic for The Suicide Squad.
