James Gunn's The Suicide Squad set photos and video reveal Margot Robbie filming as Harley Quinn, and the DC villainess has a new look with red and black hair. David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad movie featured Robbie's introduction as Harley Quinn to the (unofficially titled) DC Extended Universe. The Cupid of Crime was recruited to Amanda Waller's (Viola Davis) team of villains and survived the ordeal unscathed - mostly. The movie ended with Harley Quinn's evil beau Joker (Jared Leto) breaking her out of the maximum security prison Belle Reve, and her story continued with the recent DC film, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

However, Harley Quinn's adventures in the DCEU are far from over and she'll return in next year's The Suicide Squad, directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). The DC movie is currently filming ahead of its August 2021 release date. The Suicide Squad set photos have revealed a whole team of super-villains set to appear in the movie, including Idris Elba's mysterious character. Gunn confirmed the full Suicide Squad 2 cast last year as filming started, and Robbie was included since she's set to return as Harley Quinn. Now, new photos and video reveal the actress on set and filming for the movie.

Posted to Twitter by DC Movie News is a video of Robbie in costume as Harley Quinn for The Suicide Squad wearing a long red dress and black combat boots. She's holding a spear of some kind and hailing a yellow taxi just outside a nondescript building. An additional photo posted by Harley Quinn Updates shows Robbie in her Harley Quinn makeup and tattoos standing with Gunn. In both the video and photo, the ends of Harley's blonde pigtails are dyed red and black, referencing the character's comic book look. See the videos and photo below.

While Robbie retains Harley Quinn's blonde hair, the ends have so far been dyed pink and blue in her appearances in both Ayer's Suicide Squad and Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey. However, it seems Gunn will be putting her in costumes that reference the character's classic red-and-black color scheme, particularly Harley Quinn's New 52 look. For The Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn's hair will be dyed red and black and, at least in this case, her dress and boots getup will also be red and black. Of course, Ayer's Suicide Squad featured Harley Quinn's classic jumpsuit in a dream/hallucination sequence, so this won't be the first time the DCEU has alluded to Harley's DC comics look.

Still, this first look at Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad is sure to get fans of the character hyped. Gunn will be the third director to tackle Robbie's version of the character and it'll be interesting to see how the Cupid of Crime differs in his film compared to Ayer and Yan's iterations. Robbie and Yan's Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey has received plenty of praise, so hopefully Gunn will maintain the throughline in Harley's DCEU character arc. Since Gunn did read the Birds of Prey movie script to ensure his Harley Quinn fits within the character's new direction, fans can rest assured knowing he's up to date on the emancipated villainess. With these set photos and video, fans now know a little bit about Harley Quinn's new look in The Suicide Squad, but there's still plenty to be revealed before the movie hits theaters next year.
