The first reactions to James Gunn's The Suicide Squad have finally arrived. After more than half a year of hiatus, Warner Bros.' DCEU continues with the villain-centric movie. Deemed a soft reboot/sequel to David Ayer's 2016 original film, Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad brings some familiar faces and teaming them up with several new players for Amanda Waller's (Viola Davis) upcoming mission.

Born out of Gunn's most difficult professional experience, the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker scored the gig to write and direct The Suicide Squad shortly after he was fired by Disney from the MCU. Eventually, he was rehired to continue his work with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but having previously committed to the DCEU film, Gunn focused on making the villain-focused blockbuster. Like the original Suicide Squad, its follow-up sees Waller rounding up some of the franchise's best antagonists for a dangerous mission in exchange for shortened jail time. Task Force X will have to work together if they want to successfully destroy any trace of Project Starfish, not to mention keep themselves alive.

With less than a month away from hitting theaters and HBO Max, several critics have been given early access to watch The Suicide Squad. Now, the embargo has been lifted and non-spoiler initial reactions to the film are now available online. Check out the round-up below:

Based on this selection of social media posts, the general consensus is that Gunn delivers on his promise of making a satisfying Suicide Squad film. While these comments couldn't get into plot specifics for the movie, it seems like the cast worked together, thanks to the ensemble's chemistry. Characters such as Killer Shark, Polka Dot Man, and Bloodsport were mentioned as standouts. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is, as expected, great in the project. The filmmaker also seemed to make the most out of the blockbuster's R-rating, with comments about Gunn infusing horror elements throughout. Overall, The Suicide Squad supposedly puts the chaos from the team in the comic book on the big screen and is very fun to watch from beginning to end.

This is one great way for the DCEU to return to the cinemas after Wonder Woman 1984's controversial hybrid release. Interestingly, The Suicide Squad is deemed one of the best films from the franchise thus far, and considering the fact that Warner Bros. has already greenlit the Peacemaker spin-off show, it's safe to say that they were quite confident with Gunn's work on the project long before anyone from the public has seen it. Now, fans would just have to wait until August 6 to find out what all this positive buzz is all about.
