Suicide Squad's David Dastmalchian Teases Comic Book Research

David Dastmalchian cast as Polka-Dot Man

David Dastmalchian is teasing his comic book research to prepare for his role in The Suicide Squad. Before Disney reversed their decision on firing James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he moved quickly to find a new superhero project. He landed with Warner Bros. and DC, and agreed to tackle a soft reboot of the Suicide Squad franchise. The new film will feature a mixture of returning cast members from the 2016 film and brand new ones Gunn will introduce.

The new additions are almost completely rounded out, after Idris Elba was the first to join The Suicide Squad, and take on a new (not Deadshot) role. Since then, the sequel has added John Cena as Peacemaker and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher. The other new cast member to join the sequel is David Dastmalchian, who's no stranger to comic book movies after debuting in The Dark Knight, recurring in the Ant-Man franchise, and appearing on The Flash.

With this familiarity with both DC and Marvel, Dastmalchian is now gearing up for his role as Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad by going through the source material. He shared an image on Instagram of him reading Suicide Squad: The Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 1, showing the research he's doing to become even more familiar with DC's villain team.

Even though Dastmalchian is going to be playing Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad, his research here will not actually help him become more familiar with the obscure DC villain. This omnibus shows the origin of Task Force X, but back before they were the team made of villains they've become known as. Rick Flagg is the leader of the team during this collection of stories, who was played by Joel Kinnaman in the first movie and has been rumored to be one of the returning cast members.

Since the characters in this omnibus are not going to be the focus of The Suicide Squad, is there anything else that we can learn from this tease beyond Dastmalchian's own fandom for the source material? It's unlikely, but this story does deal with the team visiting an island inhabited by dinosaurs, so maybe James Gunn's ability to embrace the weirdness of a property could result in this being one of the team's missions. As fun as this could be, it would be quite surprising if dinosaurs were part of The Suicide Squad, but then again, Gunn has surprised us plenty of times before.
