Idris Elba's character shot Superman ahead of The Suicide Squad. James Gunn's first DCEU film has largely remained under a cloud of secrecy since it was first announced, aside from the reveal of its massive cast last year. Acting as a sort-of sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad and a sort-of reboot, The Suicide Squad will introduce a whole new antihero team stepping up to (presumably) take on some kind of impossible threat. Four characters will return from the 2016 Suicide Squad: Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Aside from them, The Suicide Squad will be populated by a lot of new characters.

Gunn kept most character details under wraps until today, when he announced the team's roster at the Suicide Squad DC FanDome panel. In total, sixteen characters were named, including Elba's Bloodsport. In the comics, Bloodspot is a Vietnam War-obsessed mercenary who acts primarily as a Superman villain. The Suicide Squad's panel also revealed some character designs, and might have hinted at where fans will find Bloodspot when the film begins.

Following the Suicide Squad character announcement, Gunn and his expansive cast played a trivia game, wherein they reached back through comic book lore to answer questions about their characters. At one point, Storm Reid (who plays Bloodsport's daughter Tyla) asked the question, "Who shot Superman?" Gunn then rephrased it to be, "Which of your characters is in prison for shooting Superman?" The answer, unsurprisingly, was Bloodsport, and it sounds like that's where his story starts in The Suicide Squad.

Considering how the 2016 Suicide Squad started off with all of its team members in prison, this origin for Bloodsport wouldn't be much of a surprise. What will be interesting to see is how The Suicide Squad chooses to reference Superman. It seems unlikely that Henry Cavill will make a cameo in the film, so it'll likely end up just being an instance where they merely mention Superman. Nevertheless, Bloodsport's violent past with Superman already establishes him as a menacing character, and it'll be fun to see how he interacts with the rest of the team.

In addition to the lengthy character list and character designs, DC FanDome saw the reveal of some behind the scenes footage of The Suicide SquadWhile it didn't necessarily feature any major plot details, it is clear that The Suicide Squad will be an action-packed romp. Producer Peter Safran described it as a "gritty 1970s war movie," which seems to be the perfect setting for a battle-oriented character like Bloodsport. What brings the titular squad all together remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Fans better buckle in for a wild ride.
