The Suicide Squad Reportedly Eyeing Benicio del Toro for Villain Role

Academy Award-winning actor Benicio del Toro is reportedly being eyed to star in The Suicide Squad as the villain. A Suicide Squad sequel has seemingly been in development since the first film was released in 2016, but the project has been delayed a number of times. Even with the mixed reviews of the original film, it looks like a follow-up film is still moving forward.

While the first film had villains like Harley Quinn, Deadshot, the Joker, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc, Slipknot, Diablo, and Enchantress, The Suicide Squad looks like it will have a fresh set of characters. So far, David Dastmalchian has been cast as Polka-Dot Man and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, but DC is also eyeing other actors for roles like Idris Elba and John Cena. Actor Michael Rooker is in talks to play King Shark, along with his Guardians of the Galaxy co-star Dave Bautista, who is rumored to be playing Peacemaker. The film has already started to fill out its cast, but it now looks like the film may have found an actor to play the villain.

According to Geeks WorldWide, Warner Bros. is apparently eyeing Del Toro to play the villain in The Suicide Squad. There is no official word as to who he might be playing, but his character is being dubbed "The Mayor", who is described as an, "irascible old warrior who lives for war". There hasn't been any official confirmation from Warner Bros. just yet, so this news should be taken with a grain of salt.

Besides the character announcements, the film has also found its director in James Gunn, who joined DC as the writer and director of The Suicide Squad last year. This news came after Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (before being re-hired by Disney). Since then, fans have gotten many more updates about the film. The Suicide Squad is expected to start filming in September, which lines the film up for a 2021 release date. The Suicide Squad is also said to be a reboot according to DCEU producer Peter Safran, but that may or may not be the case. Besides the character announcements that were listed above, this is all fans really know about the project so far.

While there has been a lot of information about the villainous protagonist in The Suicide Squad as of late, this is one of the first reports about the film's potential antagonist. Del Toro has proven himself as a diverse actor by playing serious characters like Alejandro in Sicario: Day of the Soldado, while also playing stranger roles like The Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy or even Dr. Gonzo in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Needless to say, The Suicide Squad could benefit from Del Toro's acting ability, not to mention it would give Del Toro a chance to work with Gunn once again.
