James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad shares a behind-the-scenes video that goes in-depth with the film’s characters. Best known for his memorable take on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, writer/director Gunn’s latest film is set to introduce more DC characters than any movie before it. As a sequel/reboot to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), The Suicide Squad brings back characters from the first film; including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang. However, Task Force X’s roster has expanded with villains and antiheroes with the likes of John Cena’s Peacemaker and Elba’s Robert DuBois, a.k.a. Bloodsport.

Following Gunn’s brief firing by Disney, WB hired him to breathe new life into a DC property of his choosing. Recognizing the potential of The Suicide Squad, Gunn approached DC’s vast rogues' gallery with complete creative control (something the studio isn’t exactly known for) to include whatever oddballs he deemed necessary—from Weasel and Polka Dot Man to King Shark and T.D.K. In anticipation of the film’s simultaneous August release on HBO Max and in theaters, promotional material is ramping up. The latest behind-the-scenes video showcases The Suicide Squad’s quirky ensemble.

The Suicide Squad’s official Twitter page recently shared a new teaser for the film highlighting its many characters. It begins with Gunn talking about how excited he is to introduce a plethora of often-overlooked characters before going in-depth with the actors portraying Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Harley Quinn, King Shark, Polka Dot Man, Ratcatcher 2, Mongal, Captain Boomerang, Rick Flag, Blackguard, Savant, T.D.K., and Javelin. The BTS video also reveals two other DC villains briefly shown as prisoners inside Belle Reve. One appears to be a version of The Flash villain, Double Down, and the other is the Batman baddie, Calendar Man (Sean Gunn); marking the latter’s first live-action appearance. Their appearances in the teaser are just another example of how Gunn dove deep in DC lore when assembling his cast. Not much is known about The Suicide Squad’s plot aside from Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) dispatching Task Force X on a mission to the fictional island of Corto Maltese—the film is mostly being marketed for its tone and characters.

Like Guardians of the GalaxyThe Suicide Squad will live or die by the dynamic between its characters. Literally. Gunn has promised a high body count for his R-rated action flick which is facilitated by the sheer number of misfits he has compiled and an outlandish antagonist in Starro the Conqueror. The tension between Rick Flag and Harley Quinn and the contrast between Bloodsport’s stoicism and Peacemaker’s ridiculousness have already been teased, but the larger team dynamic remains a mystery. While the first Suicide Squad had a decent dynamic, it was criticized for its lack of risk-taking—something audiences won’t have to worry about this time. Early reactions to the film promise an insane, profane, and unpredictable ride filled with characters who are loved and hated, or probably a bit of both.
