Warning! Spoilers ahead for Suicide Squad #14

In the latest issue of DC Comics' Suicide Squad, it seems as though Task Force X will be recruiting none other than Lex Luthor to their ranks (and the timing couldn't be more perfect). Currently, Amanda Waller is no longer the director of the Suicide Squad, which means Task Force X is no longer a government-backed team. With the team entering the private sector and having their own free will, Lex Luthor joining could be the missing key they need to maintain their new status quo.

In the recently concluded War for Earth-3, Amanda Waller succeeded in her efforts to relocate to the darker version of Earth and replace its Crime Syndicate with her own Justice League. This has allowed her to truly save this alternate world like she never could with the primary Earth. As a result, Rick Flag, Peacemaker, Bloodsport, Ambush Bug, and more were sent back to Earth-0. The Squad is now back in Belle Reve Prison, the new Suicide Squad #14 from Dennis Hopeless, Eduardo Pansica, and Júlio Ferreira sees Flag encouraging them to stay together despite the team no longer having to worry about the bombs in their necks going off. However, it seems as though government protocol was to blow up Belle Reve in the event the former Task Force X director went MIA.

Weeks later, Rick Flag has the Squad split up and working different missions, attempting to gain new assets such as heavy ordnance and a new Superboy/Bizzaro Clone seeing as how their last one stayed with Waller on Earth-3 to become her new Superman. However, most of the missions end up in failure or not being nearly as successful as they were meant to be by the issue's end. Undeterred, Flag comes up with a brand new mission that will solve the team's lack of funding so long as they can successfully get their hands on the Man of Steel's arch-nemesis Lex Luthor.

Suicide-Squad-Planning-To-Kidnap-Lex-Luthor

While the issue presents the mission as kidnapping with the funding coming via force, Lex Luthor is one of the most formidable supervillains of all time. The leader of the Legion of Doom being kidnapped seems extremely unlikely. However, recent events in the DC Universe may see him joining and perhaps even leading the Suicide Squad willingly, serving as their new director and financial backer with Flag continuing to lead operations in the field. After all, Luthor recently tried to kickstart Batman Inc., a failed endeavor thanks to the Dark Knight himself. Now that the Suicide Squad has gone freelance, they could become the perfect replacement team operating with blurred lines of morality (something Lex would likely prefer).

Having free will while not having the support from the government is certainly new territory for the Suicide Squad. As such, Flag is particularly aware that the team can't last unless they start having some wins along with some solid funding and support. Lex Luthor effectively replacing Amanda Waller could be exactly what the Suicide Squad needs to keep going in the DC Universe, providing a pretty exciting dynamic and status quo for all involved in future issues of the series.
