With the show coming to an end, here are all the crucial Succession season 4 updates before the show returns to screens in March 2023. Since its debut in 2018, Succession has become one of the top critically acclaimed shows on TV. The satirical dramedy has become HBO's new Emmy darling and a social media favorite, and while that hasn't translated into huge ratings for the network, it has been enough to keep it coming back for more. Succession season 4 will no doubt have the largest viewership of any Succession episode 1 to date as its loyal fanbase has grown dramatically — though nowhere near as dramatically as the events of the show itself.

Succession season 3 was perhaps the most dramatic to date. Following Succession season 2's ending, Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) finally turned against his father, Logan (Brian Cox), and the Roy family has been caught in a civil war. WayStar Royco hangs in the balance, along with the fates of multiple characters/ Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfayden) faces prison, and the specter of tragedy looms large over Kendall as he realizes just how difficult his father is to defeat. Succession season 4 should see much of the same, with the struggles of the Roy family set to continue. Nothing is certain for the characters or their futures, and there are plenty of enemies from them to face off against, not least among their own ranks.

The Latest Succession Season 4 News

Jeremy Strong in Succession season 3.

Possibly, the scariest Succession season 4 updates concern the future of the show. Showrunner Jesse Armstrong said that this upcoming season of Succession will be the last one. He said that he didn't want the show to "spin its wheels" and this means stopping it when the end was right. Armstrong said there were a lot of ways the show could go, including turning it into something different, but he wasn't interested in taking it in that direction.

You know, there’s a promise in the title of “Succession.” I’ve never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind... we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference."

In an interview with Jeremy Strong (via GQ Magazine), the actor gave his thoughts on the end of the critically-acclaimed HBO series. The interviewer mentioned that this could be the last time he portrays Kendall Roy in the series, and he didn't deny it. However, he did say leaving the role would "feel like a death, in a way." However, he also said he was envious of the freedom of other actors who can act in any projects they want, while he is tied down to the show.

“I have a broad-strokes sense of things. But this season, I didn’t want to know more. What I can say is I’m on the rack…. I feel a sense of really wanting to, now that we’re at the one-yard line, finish this season and possibly the show, in a way that delivers a real payload of what this journey has been.”

Succession Season 4 Release Date

Shortly after the season 3 premiere, HBO renewed Succession for season 4. The show hasn't been a ratings' hit, pulling in just over half a million viewers. However, Succession is now HBO's awards juggernaut, replacing Game of Thrones as the perennial Emmys contender. That will continue for one more year thanks to Succession's season 4 renewal, but the saga of the Roy family feels like it could deliver drama for at least another season beyond that. Succession season 4 will premiere on March 26, 2023.

Succession Season 4 Cast

Succession's cast has largely remained the same across seasons 1-3, and Succession season 4 updates reveal it's likely that will be the case for season 4 as well. Heading into the finale, the big question was over the fate of Kendall after Succession season 3's ending, but Ken survived and looks set to return for more misery. Succession season 4's cast should include all the key players too. Team Logan will see the return of the patriarch Logan (Brian Cox), Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen), Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun), Gerri (J Smith Cameron), Frank (Peter Friedman), and Karl (David Rasche).

Logan's ex-wife, Caroline (Harriet Walter) will be back after selling out their kids. The opposition will include the returning Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin). Alan Ruck will also be back as Connor, but no one knows whose side he will take. Justine Lupe will also be back as his fianceé Willa. Alexander Skarsgård's Lukas Mattson will be back as the man who drove the wedge between the family. Dagmara Domińczyk will reprise her role as Waystar Royco PR Karolina Novotney.

Succession Season 4 Story Details

The cast of Succession season 3.

Succession season 4's story will no doubt throw up several new twists and turns for the Roy family, especially as new alliances continue to be forged and people's noses are put out of joint. But the main thrust of Succession season 4's story will continue to be the overarching power struggle after Logan decided to make a deal with Mattson — and convince his ex-wife to change their divorce agreement — that cuts out his children, including both Roman and Shiv, out of WayStar's future. The family created battle lines, with Logan, Tom, Greg, and Gerri on one side and the four Roy siblings on the other.

Succession had always been a story of who will succeed Logan, and while that may still be the case going forward to a degree, it'll now have to examine if any of them still can, and how that may be. As for individual stories, Logan will have to find his place in the world without the business that was his life. Tom left Shiv after she beat him down for a long time. Gerri turned her back on Roman and Kendall is barely hanging on as he loses control of his life. It is time to see where the family ends up.

Succession Season 4 Trailer

The Succession season 4 updates shifted up a gear with the release of the full trailer for the upcoming season. The Succession trailer starts with attempts at getting the siblings to call and talk to their dad, but they aren't willing to make the first movie. It then showed the four siblings getting together to figure out where they stand with each other. If they are going to battle against their dad, they need to know if they can trust one another. The telling statement was when Shiv said, "This is not about getting back at dad, but if it hurts him that doesn't bother me."
