Sanaa Lathan joked that her work in Alien vs. Predator helped her prepare for her upcoming role in Succession season 3. Succession follows the dysfunctional and obscenely wealthy Roy family, proprietors of the global media conglomerate, Waystar RoyCo. At the center of the series are the greedy Roy children, who scheme to become their surly father Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) successor. Succession season 3 premieres on October 17, and it will introduce a new character to be played by Lathan.

Lathan is known for her roles in Love and Basketball, The Best Man, Brown Sugar, Contagion, and Now You See Me 2. She starred in Alien vs. Predator in 2004, the first installment of the crossover franchise. Written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the film follows a group of scientists and adventurers who get stuck in the middle of a battle between warring extraterrestrials.

Ahead of the Succession season 3 premiere next month, Lathan told Yahoo Entertainment that her role as an arctic guide in Alien vs. Predator helped prepare her for the darkly funny boardroom drama. Though a far cry from a sci-fi action film, Succession is populated with cutthroat characters and monstrous egos. In both Alien vs. Predator and Succession, Lathan indeed finds herself in the crossfire of various conflicts, whether it’s an ancient battle or the betrayal-laden fight for the soul of a company. Lathan considered the comparison with no small amount of humor. Read her quote below:

“Yes, it did [prepare me]. Slaying that alien f---ing creature definitely gave me some skills to handle some of these characters.”

For the new season of Succession, Lathan will be playing Lisa Arthur, a “high-powered, very well-connected star lawyer.” Lathan describes her character as someone who prefers to take on high-profile, heavily publicized cases, and the Roy family is certainly in the public eye. Lathan briefly appeared in-character in Succession’s season 3 trailer, where she can be seen exchanging words with Kendall Roy, implying that she will be representing him. Arthur is quick to consider the particular friction of the Roy family’s legal troubles, saying “As I understand it, you want to take down your dad without implicating yourself.” She continues, “And without damaging the company to the extent that you lose control at your shareholder meeting.”

Lathan isn’t the only new cast member to join the upcoming season of Succession. Alexander Skarsgård, Hope Davis, and Adrien Brody are all set to join season 3, and it will be interesting to see the extent of these stars’ involvement with the Roy family. Luckily, fans will learn more about Lisa Arthur and company in just a few short weeks.
