Whether he is in character or going about his normal life, actor Brian Cox enjoys making blunt and controversial remarks. Recently, the Succession actor has been at it again, blasting method acting and stating that rival series Billions is past its sell-by date (via Deadline).

Thanks to his portrayal of Roy family patriarch Logan Roy on HBO's Succession, Cox has earned himself consecutive Emmy nominations for best lead actor in a drama series in the past two years. The fictional billionaire media mogul is known for his snarky burns, hateful curses and plain insults. On occasion, though, he says something that shows his softer side.

“It'll Be OK Because He's A Good Kid.”

“Lion In The Meadow” (Season 3, Episode 4)

Logan assures Josh about the safety of his stock in Succession

After Kendall blows the whistle on the family, Josh Aaronson, an investor who owns 4% of Wayster Royco, has a meeting with both the prodigal son and his father. He declares his intention to move his funds elsewhere, but Logan assures him everything will be fine because Kendall is a “good kid.”

It’s a remark that catches Josh by surprise because as far as he knows, Kendall is far from good. He is the same person that tried to stage a coup and push his father out via a board vote. He even exposed the company's dirty practices to the press in what was one of Succession's worst acts of betrayal. Surprisingly, Logan doesn't opt for an all-out-attack strategy against his son. By hoping for Kendall to go back to his senses rather than punish him, Logan demonstrates that deep within, he is a caring dad.

“We Appreciate Your Forbearance. Like Romans Among Greeks, I'm Sure You Find Us All Rather Boisterous.”

“Tern Haven” (Season 2, Episode 5)

The Roys have dinner with the Pierce family in Succesion (Season 2)

As the Roy family has dinner with the Pearce family, Logan takes time to thank him for being patient with them. He figures any other person would have been annoyed already.

Trust Logan to only embrace courtesy when he is around fellow media moguls but watching him admit that his family can be a bit too much is nice of him. Unfortunately for him, the Pearce family takes his kindness for weakness and goes on to roast the Roy family throughout the dinner session. And it all ends with Logan going back to default and telling them to go to hell.

“You’re My No. 1 Boy.”

“Nobody Is Ever Missing” (Season 1, Episode 10)

Logan comforts Kendall in Succession

In one of Succession's most shocking moments, Kendall and a waiter at Shiv’s wedding get into an accident while they're driving to go buy drugs. Kendall fears he might be charged, especially because he left the scene after failing to save the waiter, but Logan assures him he’ll make it all go away.

Watching Logan being nice to his son at this particular moment is also surprising since Kendall had just informed him about his intention to do a hostile takeover of the company. Letting Kendall get arrested would remove the threat and that’s something the normal Logan might have done. Instead, he vows to protect Kendall and then hugs him.

“Have A Drink, You Beautiful Ichabod Crane.”

“Tern Haven” (Season 2, Episode 5)

Logan Roy spreading his arms in Succession, sitting down in his office, wearing a sweater and speaking angrily.

When the Roy family receives news that Nan is ready to sell Pierce Global Media (PGM), they decide to celebrate. And Logan even goes as far as to pour Greg a drink.

As one of the smartest characters in Succession, it’s not out of character for Logan to make a literary reference, in this case to the protagonist of Washington Irving's tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Likening Greg to him is hilarious, but what’s interesting is watching Logan, who likes ordering people around, pour a drink for his great-nephew. On any other day, Logan would have scolded Greg for either not drinking or drinking too much.

“Uncle Fun Or Grandpa Grumps?”

“Dundee” (Season 2, Episode 8)

Logan and Greg talk about his inheritance in Succession.

After Greg informs Logan about his grandfather’s threat to cut him off the will if he doesn’t leave Wayster Royco, the tycoon promises him that such a thing won’t happen. He then urges him to stay, arguing that he will be more successful working for him than hanging out with his grandpa.

It’s unlike Logan to beg anyone especially if that person is so low down the corporate ladder. If Greg were to leave, Logan wouldn’t lose much since things were just fine before he came. Still, Logan finds in his heart to not only fight for Greg but also keep him. With such a move, he gains his great-nephew’s loyalty.

“Give Her What She Wants. No Questions.”

“Return” (Season 2, Episode 7)

Logan Roy smiles while seated at the front of the table in Succession

Eager to get all the shareholders on his side, Logan sends his children to his ex-wife, who owns 3%. In order to get on Logan’s side, she makes a demand of $20 million plus having the children every Christmas or one of the family houses worth $120 million. Surprisingly, Logan declares his willingness to give her anything.

Logan is never one to agree to things without a fight, but given that the person he is dealing with is the mother of his children, it’s understandable for him to soften up a little. Like the strategist that he is, he is also looking at the bigger picture. If his ex-wife is happy, he gets to have more people that support him in board meetings.

“You OK, Tom?”

“This Is Not For Tears.” (Season 2, Episode 10)

Tom eats Logan's chicken in Succession

After confessing to Shiv that their marriage is making him unhappy, Tom heads to where Logan is, grabs his chicken and eats it. It's a moment that cements Tom's place as one of the weirdest characters in Succession and it surprises everyone, but Logan reacts rather calmly.

It’s bold of Tom to grab his father-in-law’s chicken, but that’s not as unexpected as Logan letting him get away with it. Watching Logan try to find out what’s wrong with him is heartwarming but the billionaire really the one who ought to be asked whether he is OK in the situation. Why isn’t he yelling at Tom?

“Ladies And Gentlemen, The First F---ing Thing My Son's Ever Done Right In His life.”

“The Summer Palace” (Season 2, Episode 1)

Logan Roy looking serious in Succession HBO

In the fight against Stewy and Sandy, Kendall senses which side is likely to win and chooses to align with his father. This makes Logan very proud.

Logan might be an overbearing father, but his words show that he has it in him to give credit where it’s due. After all the mistakes Kendall has made in his life, it’s refreshing for him to finally do something that won’t get him in trouble. But as happy as this makes Logan, it makes Kendall lose a great ally.

“I Formally Ask You To Come In And Be The Next Chief Executive Of This Company.”

“The Summer Palace.” (Season 2, Episode 1)

Logan makes Siv CEO in Succession

Tensions rise as everyone tries to guess Logan’s preferred successor. When he calls Shiv into the office, he surprises her with the offer to take over as CEO.

For most of the series, Logan is depicted as a dictator keen on remaining in charge of the company forever. It’s the reason his children keep fighting him, so it’s nice to see a moment where he places his trust in someone else for once. Telling Shiv in person is sweet too since the normal Logan prefers to make such announcements in front of everyone.

“Can We Be Civil And Not Pull Our Guts Out All Over The Table?”

“Chiantishire” (Season 3, Episode 8)

Logan Roy looking unimpressed in Succession

As the family is having dinner, Logan notices how much tension is building between him and Kendall. He then expresses his desire for there to be no more fighting.

The Logan in this particular scene is one who recognizes that fighting isn’t the solution to everything. A little harmony once in a while is essential to keeping the family happy. And since most fights start and stop whenever Logan decides, it’s responsible for him to prevent one on this occasion.
