A new cinematic trailer proves that there's no escaping danger in Subnautica: Below Zero, even on land. Those who played the original Subnautica will recall that the open world survival adventure took place exclusively under the sea. The upcoming sequel, unlike its predecessor, combines underwater exploration with vast land-based areas -- but don't mistake the land for a safe zone.

Subnautica: Below Zero is slated to arrive on PC and consoles in May. Players control an unnamed researcher tasked with studying an alien facility on the arctic planet 4546B. Scientists from a group called Alterra once explored the planet's regions, but they quickly fled 4546B after a "mysterious incident" occurred. The researcher must find out what happened and why before they fall victim to the planet's many dangers. Players must monitor their hunger, thirst, oxygen, and temperature levels by collecting resources and crafting safety bases. And they must do all of this while struggling to survive the planet's many dangers.

Fans caught a glimpse of some of the planet's dangerous wildlife in a brand new Subnautica: Below Zero cinematic trailer on Tuesday. The video shows the researcher from a third-person perspective as he monitors the ocean from a submarine. Unfortunately, he's not having the greatest time, as creatures attack him everywhere he goes. Fed up with the underwater wildlife, he heads to the surface to explore an above-ground facility on a glacier. Things only get worse for the man when giant blue-eyed beasts chase him away from his destination. The researcher falls into a cave below, where he discovers some sort of beast-shaped shrine. Check out the full trailer below.

While the cinematic trailer doesn't reveal too much about the plot, it does seem like Subnautica: Below Zero will have a distinct storyline. It's already known that the researcher is on a mission to discover what happened to their sister, and from the looks of the trailer, that likely has something to do with this underground shrine. What else is there to discover in the sea, in the caves, and on the surface?

Now that players can explore the land as well as the sea, there are more creatures and relics to discover than ever possible in the original Subnautica. Eager fans can check out the Early Access version of Subnautica: Below Zero on Steam ahead of its May 14 release. Just beware of the dangers of planet 4546B.
