The Normal-type is one of the most plentiful in the Pokémon series. Many Pocket Monsters have Normal combined with another type to create a dual-typing. This combination can give these creatures an advantage because Normal by itself has its limitations. Despite this, some pure Normal-types, which are Pokémon with only the Normal typing, are powerful.

Using their strength, they can overcome the limitations their typing implies. These Pokémon are evaluated on their utility in the main series games, rather than on their competitive viability. The stats, abilities, and available moves for all official Pokémon are available on Serebii.net. Despite the drawbacks, Normal-type Pocket Monsters should not be underestimated.

Ursaring

An Ursaring on the battlefield in the Pokémon anime.

Ursaring is an intimidating Pokémon that can deliver a powerful strike. Although Normal is not known for its offensive viability, Ursaring's high Attack stat allows it to use powerful Physical attacks with great strength. It also has access to some effective Physical moves of types other than Normal.

Though Ursaring does not benefit from a Same Type Attack Bonus using these moves, its high Attack stat helps to make up for it. On the other hand, it has mediocre Speed and only decent defensive stats, so Ursaring is not always the best choice.

Type: Null

Type: Null stands in a sunny field in the Pokemon anime.

With fairly consistent values in every stat except Speed, Type: Null is a reliable pick. It is usually not as viable as its evolution, Silvally, but even so, it can hold its own until it evolves. Its Attack and Special Attack are not incredible compared to other Legendary Pokémon, but they are decent.

Through TM, it has access to moves like Hyper Beam and Giga Impact, two of the most powerful Normal moves in the Pokémon series. Since both offensive stats are the same, Type: Null can use strong attacks of both categories, giving it more utility. It is not the best pure Normal-type out there, but it is certainly usable. If holding an Eviolite, it can even surpass its evolution.

Slaking

Slaking lounges on the ground in a Pokemon anime.

High base stat totals do not inherently make the best Pokémon. This is the case with Slaking, which has stats that surpass even those of some Legendaries. Its Achilles' Heel, however, comes with its Ability Truant. This only allows Slaking to move every other turn. Though this is a significant drawback, Slaking's monstrous stats help it to remain a valid combatant. Since most NPCs do not use strategies to counter Slaking, its massive Attack stat shines on the turns that Truant is not in effect. It also has great HP, so it can often survive long enough to strike.

Blissey

Nurse Joy Blissey walks down a road in the Pokemon anime.

Blissey plays a very specific role in battle, which is the role of the tank and healer. This has more viability in competitive play, but it is still useful in a playthrough. Blissey has a ridiculously high HP stat and excellent Special Defense. On the other hand, it has an almost nonexistent Defense stat. Its HP carries it through matchups, and it can use several great healing moves for when it eventually reaches low health.

Most battles in the Pokémon franchise are single battles, but Blissey is even better in double battles, assisting the team members it fights alongside. Battles using Blissey are often long, but its passable Special Attack stat allows it to chip away at opponents' health as time goes on.

Porygon2

Porygon2 floating against a pink and purple background in Pokemon.

Porygon2 is another Pokémon that benefits greatly from an Eviolite. With help from one of the most useful items in the Pokémon series, Porygon2's defensive stats skyrocket, making it better than its evolution, Porygon-Z. Without the Eviolite, Porygon2 is still a capable combatant.

Porygon2's Defense and Special Defense are good, and its Special Attack is not to be underestimated. It can access many powerful Special attacks through leveling up, TM, and TR. Although it is at its best with an Eviolite, Porygon2 does fine on its own as well.

Porygon-Z

Porygon Zdances in a field from the Pokemon series.

Due to its odd, slightly robotic appearance, most Pokémon fans think this Normal-type should belong to a different type like Electric. Upon evolving, Porygon-Z loses much of its defensive stats in exchange for higher Special Attack and Speed. Its Special Attack stat turns it into more of a glass cannon and lets it utilize its Special moves more effectively. Its Speed lets it move faster than many enemies.

These defensive drops hurt Porygon-Z significantly in matchups where it cannot finish opponents quickly. As long as it does not battle against Fighting-types, though, it can often withstand enough damage to fire off another strong attack.

Silvally

Silvally appears in a scene from the Pokemon anime.

Silvally has the unique Ability RKS System, which changes its typing depending on the memory disc it holds. Even though Silvally can be a type other than Normal, it is still functional without changing its typing. It shares stats with Type: Null, except for its Speed, which now matches the rest of its stats.

As such, these values are not as impressive as those of many other Legendary Pokémon, but they still help to solidify it as one of the best pure Normal-types. It has many moves of different types that offer coverage in matchups. Silvally is consistent in combat, even if it does not excel in any one area.

Snorlax

Ash's Snorlax jumps down in the Pokemon anime.

One of the strongest Pokémon from the Kanto region, Snorlax still endures as one of the most powerful pure Normal-types. This is due to its high HP, Special Defense, and Attack. The former two help it to be incredibly difficult to defeat. Additionally, its Attack allows it to destroy many opponents that cannot strike it down. If Snorlax can use Belly Drum to maximize its Attack and still survive, it can clear out entire enemy teams. It struggles a bit more with Physical attackers, but even so, it can usually take several hits.

Regigigas

Regigigas stands in a temple in the Pokemon anime.

The Ability Slow Start greatly restrains Regigigas in the early portions of battles. This cuts its Speed and Attack in half for the first five turns it is in battle, making it much less intimidating early on. However, with its high HP and defensive stats, it can often last long enough for its Ability to become inactive.

At this point, there is little that can stop Regigigas. Its massive Attack stat paired with some incredible Physical attacks help it to live up to its powerful appearance. There are also some strategies to stall out its Ability, which make it easier for Regigigas to reach its full potential.

Arceus

Arceus floating in a multicolored sky in the Pokémon anime.

All of Arceus's stats have the same value, and they are all very high. Like Silvally, Arceus can change its type based on the item it holds, but Arceus did it first. Even without a type change, Arceus is an exceptional fighter. Access to fantastic moves like Extreme Speed and its signature move Judgment gives it an immense amount of power to use against opponents.

As a Normal-type, it is only vulnerable to Fighting, and even these attacks can rarely take it down easily. Hopefully, with the release of Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Arceus will become more accessible than it has been previously.
