Gamma radiation authority and founding Avenger Bruce Banner has had many incarnations of his superhero alter ego the Incredible Hulk throughout his career in Marvel Comics. Though he has been hailed as "the strongest one there is," the most powerful form of the Hulk remains his infamous Green Scar manifestation.

After being banished from the planet Earth by the secret cabal of heroes known as the Illuminati for his destructive tendencies, the Hulk finds himself stranded on the alien war planet Sakaar. Veteran Hulk writer Greg Pak (The Incredible Hercules) and artist Carlo Pagulayan (Red She-Hulk)'s classic Planet Hulk storyline details the exiled Hulk's journey to survive on his own on Sakaar. Forced to compete in a deadly gladiatorial tournament by Sakaar's Red King, the Hulk begins to shift away from his Bruce Banner persona and finds solace in a new identity... the Green Scar. Unlike his standard Hulk form, Hulk's Green Scar personality acts as an amalgam of several prior personalities of the jade giant, from the aggressive Grey Hulk (Joe Fixit) to the highly intelligent Professor Hulk.

It is the Green Scar personality who keeps Hulk alive throughout Planet Hulk and gives the monster the strength needed to not only defeat his fellow competitors but to reclaim Sakaar for the people. As Green Scar, Hulk proves capable of extraordinary feats of strength far surpassing his usual abilities, with 100 tons potentially being a limit. Even without Banner steering the wheel, Green Scar Hulk proves capable of exhibiting common human emotions and gaining the trust of the Sakaarans to rally behind him. Accepting his role as Sakaar's Green Scar, Hulk finally adjusts into his new life on the planet with his newfound wife and child, only to fall victim to a series of tragedies which brings him back down to Earth.

Hulk's Greatest Tragedies Only Made Him Stronger

It is this tragedy that makes Green Scar the strongest of all the Hulks. It's been shown that the angrier the Hulk gets, the stronger he becomes, and the loss of his family causes Green Scar to reach a level of anger unlike anything Banner had ever reached before. The complexity of his emotions seems to contribute to his buildup of strength, going beyond the pure rage and tantrums seen from most forms of the jade giant.

The Green Scar incarnation of Hulk would make a surprise comeback in writer Al Ewing (Venom) and artist Joe Bennett (Captain America: Sam Wilson)'s fan-favorite Immortal Hulk run of comics. This version of the Green Scar identity finds itself occupied by Hulk nemesis Samuel Sterns aka the Leader, who wishes to use the destructive form against Banner and his alter ego. The Green Scar incarnation of Hulk even made its way to the big screen in Marvel Studios' Thor Ragnarok, which loosely borrowed elements from Pak and Pagulayan's acclaimed Planet Hulk comic book storyline. Though not quite as powerful as his original comic incarnation, the MCU's Green Scar depiction was also quite articulate and powerful within its Hulk makeup.

When it comes to Green Scar Hulk, it is not only the strength that enables the hero to overcome his opponents but Hulk's emotional capabilities for befriending other races and gathering others to fight for him. Green Scar really is the "best of both worlds" balance that the Incredible Hulk and Bruce Banner have been in search of throughout their tumultuous comic book partnership.
