While Marvel and DC can boast ultra-powerful characters such as Superman and Captain Marvel, there are plenty of characters from other publishers who are just as strong, if not stronger. Though these characters may not be as well known, their immense power cannot be denied.

Whether it's dark anti-heroes like Spawn or supernatural entities like Hellboy, plenty of powerful heroes exist outside of the two main publishers. While there may be plenty of great independent comic characters, some possess immense power that rivals even the strongest superhumans from Marvel or DC.

Savage Dragon

The Dragon looks on with ripped police clothes on from Savage Dragon

Generally considered one of the best Image comics of all time, Savage Dragon was a flagship title for the trailblazing independent label. Working as a police officer in a fictional version of Chicago that is besieged by mutants, Savage Dragon pulls no punches with his enemies.

Green of skin, and possessing a large fin on top of his head, the ultra powerful mutant is as smart as he is powerful. Seemingly indestructible, Dragon has run up against some of the most dangerous villains in the Image universe, and lived to tell the tale. Being a mutant himself, Dragon chose to operate on the right side of the law, unlike many of his genetically modified contemporaries.

Super-Shock

Super-Shock hovers in the air from Powers comics

Though the comic bounced from publisher to publisher over the years Powers was one of the most unique takes on the superhero genre. Super-Shock is one of the titular powers, and he is perhaps the strongest off all of the superheroes ever featured in the comics.

Existing for millennia, Super-Shock secretly protected the denizens of earth for centuries before he finally allowed himself to be known by all. While he is shown to have super strength and speed, it is possible that his powers are absolutely infinite. His secretiveness means that little was known about him, and readers never got the chance to see the full capabilities of his powers.

Hellboy

Hellboy is wrapped in a tentacle from Hellboy comics

While most comic book heroes are space aliens, or superhumans, Hellboy was another type of being entirely. Born as a demon from hell, Hellboy quickly came to despise the Nazis that summoned him, and devoted his life to fighting all sorts of monsters with the B.P.R.D.

Being a demon, Hellboy isn't limited to the abilities of a mere human, and he is capable of immense feats of strength. On top of that, he is practically invincible with a fast acting healing factor that allows him to resists most earthly affronts. As for his offensive abilities, Hellboy's right hand is made of stone and allows him to punch some of Hellboy's best villains into oblivion.

Invincible

Invincible assembled with Atom Eve and other heroes from Invincible Universe comic

Part superhero story, part coming of age tale, Invincible gave readers a fun take on what the life of a teen superhero would really be like. Growing up in the shadow of his immensely popular superhero father, Invincible attempts to navigate the complicated worlds of high school and a superhero career at the same time.

Gifted with the skill of flight, and superhuman strength, Invincible also lives up to his name by being practically immune to injury from anything but a similarly powerful being. Though he is impervious to most attacks, the true intrigue of the comic series comes from the interpersonal drama that even Mark isn't too powerful to avoid.

The Mask

The Mask sitting in the Oval Office in The Mask comics

Now mostly remembered for the immensely successful Jim Carrey film of the same name, The Mask was actually an ultra-violent piece of 1990s satire. The titular mask is an ancient relic that bestows its wearer with the ability to bend all reality.

When possessed by The Mask, the individual's abilities are seemingly only limited by the depths of their imagination, and they can manifest cartoonish weaponry. Unfortunately, anyone wearing The Mask loses any and all sense of social obligation and can more often than not become a violent anti-hero. The limitlessness of The Mask is what sets him apart from other superpowered characters, and there is little that he cannot do.

Spawn

Spawn reaches while leaping from Spawn #1

If any superhero typified the angsty energy of the 1990s, it was Todd McFarlane's signature creation in Spawn. Originally known as Al Simmons, Spawn was born when Simmons was murdered and sent to hell. Making a deal with a demon, Simmons agreed to become a Hellspawn in order to see his family one last time.

Back on earth with a supernatural skill set, Spawn fights enemies using his superhuman strength, and is nearly impervious to damage. His supernatural talents have manifested in a multitude of ways over the years, and his powers are almost limitless. Since he isn't a living being technically, death means very little to Spawn and he is impossible to defeat by any force outside of hell itself.

Samaritan

Samaritan speaks with Winged Victory from Astro City

Known as the patron hero of the Astro City comics, Samaritan is similar to Superman in many ways, but with unique twists as well. Originally sent from the future to stop earth's eventual destruction, Samaritan was granted his abilities on his time spanning journey.

Samaritan is blessed with all of the typical superhero accoutrements, but his ability to warp reality makes him unbelievably powerful. With an eye towards impacting the future, Samaritan often thinks ahead to the effect that his missions will have later on. Outside of his immense powers, Samaritan is also ultimately moralistic which makes him one of the greatest protectors of Astro City.

Homelander

Homelander leads the Seven in The Boys

While most superhero comics have a hopeful view of their powerful characters, The Boys showed their supers in a much darker light. On the surface, Homelander is the perfect superhero Boy Scout, but beneath his shiny veneer is a soul that burns with hatred.

Super strength and flight make him a force to be reckoned with, but Homelander's most dangerous ability is his lack of empathy. Deceptive to the last, Homelander has no qualms with doing someone harm to advance his own cause. Like Superman turned evil, Homelander is one of the most powerful comic characters because he is willing to use his powers for evil instead of good.

The Plutonian

The Plutonian Smashing Rocks

Irredeemable stood out among its comic book contemporaries by making the villain the main character of the story. The comic's baddie, The Plutonian, is one of the most iconic villains outside of Marvel or DC. The Plutonian is a hero-turned-villain who vows to bring down the super-team that he used to be a part of, while also slaughtering humanity on a wholesale level.

The disillusioned former hero possess superior strength and a whole host of other powers that make him dangerous adversary. However, The Plutonian's superior intellect also means that he is quick to outsmart his superhero foes with a clever ploy. The depths of his depravity are endless, and there isn't anyone who The Plutonian won't wipe out on his evil conquest of the planet.

Max Faraday

Max Faraday wields his powers from the Divine Right comics

The comic series Divine Right was an utterly unique look at superheroes and the entire comic book medium itself. Max Faraday is the so-called protagonist of the series, but his motivations certainly put him firmly in the anti-hero category, and his powers make him the most dangerous being in the universe.

After accidentally downloading the Creation Equation, a simple pizza delivery boy is granted omnipotent abilities through the sheer power of his will alone. There isn't anything that Faraday can't do, from resurrection of himself and others, to the total erasure of the entire universe. Elevated beyond even god status, Faraday would give even the most powerful beings from any comic universe a run for their money.
