Strike Back: Sullivan Stapleton & Philip Winchester to Guest Star This Season

Sullivan Stapleton and Phlip Winchester in Strike Back

Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester, the original stars of Cinemax’s Strike Back, will guest star in two episodes of the new season. The action-packed military drama recently returned for a new season with an all-new cast that includes Luther’s Warren Brown, Daniel McPherson (A Wrinkle in Time), Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones), and Alin Sumarwata (Jack Irish). But even though the series has welcomed a brand new batch of soldiers to Section 20, that doesn’t mean it’s forgotten those who came before, to help make the series what it is.

As such, Strike Back season 5 (or season 6, if you live in the U.K.) will see the brief return of Sgt. Damien Scott and Sgt. Michael Stonebridge. The pair will be back for the final two episodes of the new season in what Cinemax is calling “special guest appearances,” so while it’s a sure thing that the duo will be around, it’s unclear (for American audiences, anyway) what sort of impact they’ll have on the season’s storyline or its sure-to-be explosive finale.

Cinemax announced the news today in a press release that also includes the dates for when Stapleton and Winchester’s guest spots will take place.

Strike Back Season 5 Cast

“Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester, the stars of the original run of the CINEMAX action series STRIKE BACK, will reprise their roles as Sgt. Damien Scott and Sgt. Michael Stonebridge with special guest appearances in the episode slated to debut FRIDAY, MARCH 30 (10:00-10:50 p.m. ET/PT) and the season finale, debuting FRIDAY, APRIL 6 (10:00-10:50 p.m.)”

The news is likely welcome to fans of the show, and for those who have come to think of Scott and Stonebridge as the characters who largely made the show a success. Their characters were solid action-hero archetypes that live on in a sense, as even though Brown and McPherson’s Sgt. Thomas “Mac” McAllister and Sgt. Samuel Wyatt bring something new to the series, they also share many of the defining characteristics of their predecessors.

Whether or not Scott and Stonebridge will interact much with the new members of Section 20 remains to be seen, but it would be a welcome sight. It would also give the Strike Back a chance to actually show the changing of the guard, with the series’ former stars passing the torch to the new crew. Perhaps if the guest appearances garner a positive enough response, the series’ producers and writers can look to include more of the same in future seasons. That is, of course, provided Scott and Stonebridge survive their initial return.
