Season 6 of Strike Back is headed to Cinemax sooner than expected, as the first trailer for the new season confirms a late January 2019 premiere date. Pound for pound the most explosive series on television (seriously, this show loves blowing stuff up), Strike Back has proven itself as mutable and enduring as other television stalwarts with interchangeable casts, like Law & Order and CSI. The main difference being that this rambunctious action series is in no way suitable for broadcast television.

Last season introduced a new team and though there was an adjustment period, it wasn’t long before the series started to feel like its old self again. And, as a way of ingratiating itself to longtime fans, series mainstays Philip Winchester and Sullivan Stapleton reprised their roles as Sgt. Michale Stonebridge and Sgt. Damien Scott in an episode late in season 5. The result was a fun throwback that also worked as a way for the series to officially pass the torch to the new guys.

Those new guys (and gals) will welcome a new face in season 6, as former Battlestar Galactica star Jamie Bamber joins the cast as the new head of Section 20. And in case you were worried that Bamber would simply play the man in the chair, the trailer will quickly disabuse you of that notion. Check out the first trailer for season 6 as well as a brief synopsis directly from Cinemax below:

“The action-packed CINEMAX drama series STRIKE BACK will kick off its sixth season FRIDAY, JAN. 25 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT). Starring Warren Brown, Daniel MacPherson, Alin Sumarwata, Jamie Bamber and Yasemin Kay Allen, the show follows the explosive escapades of Section 20, an elite, multinational, covert special ops team, as it spans the globe fighting a vast web of interconnected criminal and terrorist activity.”

With the new team now firmly out of the getting-to-know-you stage, the banter between Sam (Daniel MacPherson), new team leader Mac (Warren Brown), and Gracie (Alin Sumarwata) is on par with what the show’s been like before. Aside from the superb action sequences and, yes, stuff getting blown up, Strike Back’s appeal is largely connected to the camaraderie between the characters, which makes for plenty of lively banter in between Michael Bay-sized explosions.
