The world will be in need of saving at least one more time, as Cinemax announces it — along with Sky — has renewed the long-running action series Strike Back for season 7, which will be the series’ last… for now. The series has been a Cinemax-Sky co-production for almost 10 years at this point, first following the exploits of Sgt. Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and Sgt. Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) before the series picked up again with a new team, headed up by Sgt. Thomas ‘Mac’ McAllister (Warren Brown), Sgt. Samuel Wyatt (Daniel MacPherson), and LCpl. Gracie Novin (Alin Sumarwata), who, like their predecessors, have been through the wringer in a relatively short amount of time.
Strike Back already came to an end of sorts in 2013, marking the end of Winchester and Stapleton’s time with Section 20. The series proved its Law & Order-like mutability roughly two years later with this newest iteration of the show picking up where things left off, much like how Winchester and Stapleton did after the Richard Armitage-led first season, which was rebranded Strike Back: Origins in the US. While that gives fans of the series reason to think that the series might undergo another casting shakeup in a few years’ time, those affiliated with Cinemax and the series itself seem to see season 7 as being the end of the line.
In an official statement from Cinemax, Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax programming had this to say:
"STRIKE BACK established CINEMAX as a destination for adrenalized, entertaining action series nearly a decade ago. It is with sincere gratitude for the service of all of the past and present members of Section 20 - both in front of and behind the camera - that we send the team of on one last mission to save the world from annihilation."
Meanwhile, season 6 showrunner Jack Lothian also chimed in, saying:
"I am delighted we're coming back for a final season. STRIKE BACK is a show that's always raised the bar for small-screen action, and we're looking forward to doing that one last time. There are plenty of twists and turns ahead, but I can promise one thing - we're going out with a bang."
The latest season has gotten off to a great start, featuring some of the flashiest action set pieces the show has ever attempted, and it’s proven just how well the new team has gelled, especially with the addition of new Section 20 CO Alexander Coltrane (Jamie Bamber). With any luck, the series’ final season will be as entertaining and action-packed as this one has been.
Strike Back continues this Friday @10pm on Cinemax.
