Production has begun on The Strangers horror movie remake, which will consist of a trilogy of movies and is set to star Madeline Petsch of Riverdale fame. The original film, released in 2008, featured Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a dysfunctional couple trying to survive a home invasion by masked attackers. The Strangers was written and directed by Bryan Bertino in his feature debut. Since then, he has continued to have an impressive filmography of genre hits, including cult favorite The Dark and the Wicked, while also co-writing the sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night, a decade later.

Nearly five years after the last film hit theaters, Lionsgate has announced that The Strangers remake has entered production with A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master's Renny Harlin directing. The horror movie is said to follow Petsch's unnamed character and her boyfriend, played by Teen Wolf's Froy Gutierrez, taking refuge in an Airbnb after their car breaks down in the Ohio wilderness, where they are attacked by three masked figures. Harlin said about his genre return:

“My mother instilled the love of movies in me through the world of Hitchcock and other masters of suspense and horror. My breakthrough to Hollywood happened with the success of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4. It is only fitting that I get to return to my favorite genre with the incredibly well written trilogy of The Strangers. The characters and the storyline are all grounded in reality and offer me an endless tapestry of haunting visuals in bringing these movies alive.”
