Netflix's smash hit series Stranger Things is chock full of super fun and intriguing science fiction creations and concepts, and one of its most iconic and narratively relevant sci-fi elements is a dimension that the Party has not so affectionately dubbed the Upside Down. The Upside Down is essentially a near carbon copy of the real world, except it's desolate, dark, and apparently inhabited by scary monsters like the Demogorgon, the Demodogs, and the Mind Flayer.

But the entirety of the Upside Down is still almost completely shrouded in mystery. We know that it exists, we know that the Demo-squad is there, but beyond that, there is really not a lot of info about this dimension. And this is 10 certain things about the Upside Down really don't seem to make sense.

How Do People Survive There

The Upside Down appears to be a dimension that has a lot in common with our own, but that is also starkly different from our own. Obviously the real world is inhabited by humans, and the Upside Down appears to be inhabited by nothing other than Demogorgon-related beings and some bizarre sorts of growth.

But given that it's an entirely different dimension, it's pretty surprising that humans can actually survive in it, or that the creatures that inhabit it can survive in the human world as well. The likelihood of that seems astronomically low, even if it's pretty convenient for storytelling purposes.

Why Is It The Only One

Or is it the only one? The Upside Down is a copy of the real world, but if Stranger Things is operating under the theory of multiple universes then it's odd to think that the Upside Down is the only other dimension, and it's even a little odd that it's the only alternate dimension that has been discovered.

Given how easy it seemed to be to reveal the upside down and actually make contact with it, it begs the question whether or not there are many other dimensions, and why the US or the Russians haven't delved into this possibility more.

The Mind Flayer

Since the Mind Flayer has basically become the supervillain of Stranger Things, pretty much everyone has been asking a chicken or egg question about the Flayer and the Upside Down.

Did the Mind Flayer originate from the Upside Down, or did it exist in another dimension and find the Upside Down, ultimately taking it over like it aimed to do with the real world dimension? And if the Mind Flayer actually came from the Upside Down, they why does it seem to be literally the only sentient creature in the entire dimension? Were there others that the Mind Flayer destroyed, or was it always the only one?

El's Connection To It

Regardless of anything else, it seems that El has some kind of natural connection to the Upside Down that no one else can understand. It's undeniable that her psychic powers are astounding and strong, but connecting to some being in another dimension is pretty powerful.

But the show has never been clear on how it is that she did that, or even how the Demogorgon managed to connect with her and find wherever she was. Was the Demogorgon just there, and cottoned on to the existence of the other dimension when El found it? And did El have any idea that the Upside Down existed before that moment?

It's Identical To The Real World

Stranger Things Will Byers Upside Down

On the surface, the whole notion of a mirror dimension isn't that hard to grasp or believe in, but upon further investigation it's actually really confusing. We all understand what a mirror is and how it works, but we also all know that when we see a reflection of something in a mirror that those somethings don't actually exist, it's just an image.

So how is it that the Upside Down is an alternate dimension that is a mirror of our own dimension? There really hasn't been any explanation as to why this phenomenon is happening, nor an explanation about how far it goes.

The Electrical Storms

Stranger Things season 3 Mind Flayer

One of the recurring elements of the Upside Down seem to be these bizarre electrical storms that keep happening. They do happen continually, they appear to have some kind of significance, but there is no explanation about what they are or why they're happening.

And the Upside Down appears to be some kind of "inactive" dimension, as if it's just a mirror of the real world where nothing really lives and nothing really seems to happen. So why is there this one constant activity going on, and what does it mean?

The Portals

Stranger Things is very clear on the fact that portals between the Upside Down and our own dimension are very possible, to the point where it actually seems pretty easy for an organism to tear its way through the Upside Down and into the world.

However, why is that? Why does it seem like it's easier to get out of the Upside Down than to get in? And more importantly, if the barriers between these two dimensions is so fragile, why hasn't the Upside Down been discovered before now? It seems like it should have been discovered accidentally many times before.

 The Demogorgons

There is a lot of mystery surrounding both the Demogorgons and the Upside Down itself, but what is confusing about the Upside Down when it comes to the Demogorgons is why they exist there and seem to have some sort of control over the dimension.

Did the Demogorgons already always exist there, and contact with El just linked them with our world? Or did they find the Upside Down and make it their own? Not to mention, how can they actually tear through that dimension and make their way into our world?

The Lights

So one of the most memorable moments in all of Stranger Things is when Joyce Byers realizes that Will is trying to communicate with her through the lights in their house. In order to facilitate that, she writes the alphabet on her living room wall, and she strings up Christmas lights so Will can use that to speak to her more clearly.

It's a visually striking scene, but nothing about it makes any sense. Did Will magically gain psychic powers in the Upside Down? And even if he did, why is it that lights or electricity are the only way he can communicate, why not just speak to her directly?

Its Existence

At this point we all know that the Upside Down exists, but what no one knows or has any explanation for is why it actually does exist.

Parallel dimensions aren't hard to believe in and they're elements in science fiction stories all the time, but an identical dimension that exists right on the edge of our own is harder to believe in, especially when there's no explanation for why it's there or why it hasn't been discovered before now. The show hasn't gone out of its way to explain it either, so if there is some sense behind it, the audience isn't in on that.
