Stranger Things is a pretty aptly titled science fiction television series. It takes place in the previously mundane town of Hawkins, Indiana, which is the site of an experimental government lab and becomes the site of a bizarre trans-dimensional portal to a world colloquially known as the Upside Down.

The Upside Down is essential a shadow realm version of the real world, something that looks nearly identical to the earthly plane but is infested with some extremely otherworldly creatures. And although these creatures and this dimension have been the centerpiece of the story for three seasons running now, there are still a lot of burning questions about the Upside Down that the show has not yet answered.

Why Does It Look Like Hawkins?

Hawkins Laboratory

The concept of alternate universes is a common one, and the concept of parallel universes is even one that has been explored in sci-fi many times. But it's pretty insane that the Upside Down is literally a shadow version of Hawkins itself, down to the very last detail.

So that begs the question, why does it look like that? How did this bizarre plane of existence become an identical mirror to the world that sits above it?

What Do The Russians Want With It?

The fact that Stranger Things takes place during the Cold War seems to be a vitally important element to the entire premise of the series. So there is an argument to be made that the Russians want the Upside Down simply because the Americans have already accessed, it, and they don't want the US to have anything that they don't.

But are there benefits to it beyond that simple competition that the Russians are seeking by opening the gate again?

Is Hawkins The Only Portal?

We all saw El's contact with the very first Demogorgon, and we saw how that initial interaction seemed to literally crack open the doorway between worlds.

But is this the very first time that the Upside Down and the "Right Side Up" have ever made contact with one another? And did that connection between El and the Demogorgon somehow mark Hawkins as the Upside Down hot spot on the entire world, or can it be accessed from any other point?

Was Hopper In It?

David Harbour as Jim Hopper in Stranger Things 4

In the least surprising reveal of all time, the teaser trailer for season 4 of Stranger Things let everyone know that the presumed dead Jim Hopper was very much alive, and seemed to be stuck in a Russian prison.

But how did he get there? Did the Russians somehow snag him from Hawkins and take him home, or did he wind up in the Upside Down and did the Russians retrieve him there and take him for themselves?

How Far Does It Go?

Stranger Things Mind Flayer Upside Down

The very nature of the Upside Down forces the audience of Stranger Things to ask a lot of natural questions about it. And one of the most obvious ones is how big this dimension really is.

The Upside Down that we've seen appears to be a near carbon copy of Hawkins, but how far does that extend? Is this dimension essentially the same size as the entire world, and we've only seen a portion of it? And if it's not, where does the dimension end?

Did There Used To Be Living Things There?

There is clearly some sort of life that exists in the Upside Down. Aside from the Demogorgon, Demodogs, and the Mind Flayer, there is some bizarre kind of growth that looks almost fungal and spore-like. But was this nightmarish underworld always this way?

We've seen the kind of destruction that this hive-minded Demo-Flayer species can do, so was the dimension of the Upside Down different, and did the Mind Flayer already do it's work there, or is this just the way the Upside Down has always been?

Why Wasn't It Discovered Before?

El's connection to the Demogorgon seems to be the driving force behind the entire discovery of the Upside Down. But what seems very strange is how easy the Upside Down is to access once that connection has been made.

The Demogorgon and it's fellow monsters seem to have a very easy time breaking through the dimensions to hunt down it's prey, so is this really the only time that the two dimensions have ever crossed paths?

Has It Been Accessed Before?

Again, not to undercut what an extraordinary person El really is, but was her bizarre encounter with the Demogorgon the first time that anyone has ever accessed this other dimension?

We don't know how long the Upside Down has existed, how big the dimension is, or how far it really goes in the world, but something this big and this close to our own dimension seems like something that wouldn't be hard to stumble on to just like El and Dr. Brenner did.

How Did The Mind Flayer Get There?

Stranger Things 3 Trailer - Upside-Down Monster

The Mind Flayer is a pretty interesting creature, even within the context of the Upside Down. Because it's species appears to be the only thing that exists in the Upside Down at this current moment, but is it something that is native to the dimension?

Or, in a much scarier thought, is it some kind of dimension-hopping parasite that found the Upside Down before, demolished it, and now sees our home world as another place to consume and destroy?

What Was It Like Before The Mind Flayer?

Stranger Things season 3 Mind Flayer

Stranger Things has showed us what kind of destruction that the Mind Flayer is capable of in the matter of a few days. And we have no idea how long that it has existed in the Upside Down.

But if the Mind Flayer worked it's parasitic mojo on the entirety of the Upside Down, then what was the dimension like before? Was it just some empty copy of the real world, or were there some sort of living beings there too?
